160 miles a day?
Don't think an M5 or VXR8 would be suitable.
How about a Range Rover Supercharged, an Audi Q7 W12, or a Mercedes GL63 AMG? All will be nice and comfy for a long commute.

Crikey, you must have some money to burn. An M5 or a VXR8 would not be on my list if I was looking at that sort of daily milage. Not unless I liked spending all of my money at the petrol station. I'd be looking at a nice oil burner. If I was doing 160 miles a day in the Monaro, I'd be filling up every day and a half. Christ, my bum just went tight thinking about it. Have I got the wrong end of the stick here? Me? I'd probably gor for a 3.0 TDI Audi A5 or a 3 series M Sport Coupe.

New shape Jag XJ diesel - over 40mpg and still fast or an Audi A8 diesel. My Phaeton 3.0 TDi is pretty good, but only gets 35mpg.

I'm sure someone will be along with some sensible advice. I have a Ro but I've driven a VXR8. It's a nice car and a good alternative to the Ro if you want more space, but a very different experience to the Monaro. I would drive both if you can and see what you like. If you switch to the BMW though, you'd better get used to people going from giving you the thumbs up (in the Ute) to giving you the finger and tosser sign

Slippery didn't have much luck doing big miles in his r8 but not sure an m5 will be any better tbh, i think an auto r8 would be the pick of the two though.

Silly question. vxr8. Keep it stock with bolt on's as max. Plus perhaps a few economy tweaks to the tune. Auto is factory rated better on fuel. Mainly due to final drive ratio and proactive shifting algorithms. Im going to be doing another 500 mile week in mine The camaro is also a good choice. Basically anything with a US v8 is acceptable. Thanks Both are capable of throwing up big repair bills if you are unlucky. At those miles, if I had my time again, I would make sure I paid a premium and got a main dealer warranty. My decision to save a couple of grand and buy privately cost me dearly. My next move is likely to be either (in no particular order): Mercedes C/CLS/S/CL/E 63 AMG Mercedes S600 Bi-Turbo Jaguar XFR Lexus ISF BMW 760Li Audi S8 The Lexus is the often overlooked car that is likely to give the least trouble, yet gives the others a run for their money. Good luck in your search and enjoy whatever you choose.

I have an occasion run that is 550 miles at one hit, with just a 10 min stop for fuel.
I would have to say the VXR8 is just a little more comfortable than the Monaro over that distance, but not too much in it. Not done the same with the M5 so can't make that comparison. I would stay with the quieter exhaust though for a regular commute as stated already.

BMW= drivers won't let you out of junctions or motorway lanes etc. VXR8= drivers will let you out, because they'll want to follow you to figure out what you're driving.

Defo VRX simple engine that's cheap to service & fix. So many sensors on modern BMW's and espc M5 they still suffer from vanos issues and the cost of oil!!!!!

So many variables and so many unknowns that without further information you could say anything. I wouldn't groupall the AMG xx63's together Slippy- They all have completely different profiles, are different animals, and have different engine configurations! Then thinking about the S600 and a Lexus IS in the same grouping? Seriously? The one pertinent point the OP didn't mention is budget: Are we talking sub £20k or brand new? If its brand new you'd seriously need a trip to the shrink to even consider a £45K+ Vauxhall. What do you want from a car? If it's an experience and smile on your face - and with a sub £20K budget, screw logic and convention and get a VXR8

The premium for ls3's over ls2's is now only around £2000 or maybe £3000 IMO thats well worth paying for. The intake and heads and displacement will cost you way more than that.
The LS2 is 1990's technology the LS3 stuff is 15 years newer. Its designed to make good power with emissions compliant cams. While that means older heads are still good if emissions arnt a concern. You can run a smaller cam and be more emissions friendly with the ls3 and still make excellent power.

The LS3 is only worth the premium if you intend to tinker with it. In standard form, I could feel no discernable difference between the LS2 and the LS3.
