Hi all
I have a plan formulating with the intention of moving into V8 power within the next 12 months.
Could anyone that uses theirs as a daily driver (which it would be)give an indication of running costs? What I'm interested in mainly is monthly costs (fuel expense v mileage covered) & annual costs (servicing costs & the like)?
Having spoken to a couple of people I can't see it being any/much worse than my current 24v auto Vx Senator (servicing costs yes as I do that myself currently) but want to budget correctly (including purchase).
TIA
Mike

mine is my daily drive. costs are so high i am planning on selling and moving on. all my driving is country roads making lots of gearbox use. i spend about 30 pounds monday to friday to go to work and back 2 miles each way and 10 miles to the petrol station. then 50 pounds per weekend just general shopping and what not. also with the miles put on you will get through tyres faster which are 1000 pound a set and depending on servicing fussiness the fuel to get you to monkfish will double and maybe more the price of the service. but as ferret said lots of it does depend on your style of driving.

I use mine as a daily driver and it's currently costing me 57p per mile or £571 per month, not including depreciation. Tasty. I've done 12,000 miles since I bought it, and think it's been money well spent. :-)

Same as any other V8...but with some inherent reliability thrown in from the Chevy motor....some serviceable items are a tad dearer than more mainstream V8's but otherwise it is going to be down to how many miles you put on the clock!...you pays your money!

Are you talking about a monaro or vxr8? Consumables appear to be rather differently priced.

For the OP, I don't need my car for commuting, but on the odd weeks I have needed to, it has averaged 22/23 mpg. This is based on an 8 mile trip to work (16 mile round trip each day) on 50/60mph A roads. Short trips are not ideal, as the gearbox wouldn't have been up to operating temps. Servicing- I'm in Cumbria, so it is a 500 mile trip to Monkfish. However, this doesn't put me off. I simply tie-in a service with a trip to Santa pod. This year it was the Mopar nationals I will probably do the same next year.

I have a 05 CV8 Monaro that I use as a daily driver. I do approximately 55 miles a day and average 28-30 mpg to tank about £75 to fill and thats a mixture of A roads and motorway. I only work 4 days a week and a tank lasts me just overca week. Apart from a recent service and road tax it has not cost me anything extra, but it is going in for new discs and pads plus new suspension in a few weeks ( suspension is my choice brakes are needed). Alot of it comes down to driving style with these cars.

I have an LS2 Monaro as my daily driver. I do about 50 miles a day and a weekly fill costs me no more than £70. Trip computer so far this week says 26mpg.

Assuming you buy a decent one without any issues I think they are worth the money, I have a cv8 as my daily driver. 11 miles each way, mixture of roads 17mpg ish per tank. The service costs are on monkfish site , they sell the consumables separate if you doing it yourself. Biggest issue with it being a daily driver is that if something does go wrong the parts can take some tracking down and you could be without the car for a bit. Depends if you have access to another car or could do without for a week.

I Have a VXR8
fuel 30p/mile average service every 10K Oil £70 Mobil 1 Oil filter - <£5 K&n or delco off ebay air filter k&n £40 lasts up to 50k before re oil (ebay) plugs every 40-70k £90.00 tyres 15-26k change £170 - 350 depends how you drive and if you do track days etc. brakes pads £130 should last 20-50k Disks £ 800-2.5k(dealer price) every 50k miles depends on your driving
insurance £350-2k+ depends who you are and where you are TAX £450 per year im doing 18 K a year aprox

the main point is that most people dont like driving or buying fuel the big V8's are incredible value for money.

A Monaro is probably one of the least expensive ways of running a V8. Look at the MPG of any Audi or Mercedes V8 for example, and then compare Audi servicing costs with ours.
But it's not cheap motoring by any stretch.

This is not my experience. LS2 Monaro also. Mix of roads including heavy traffic for a good portion of it. Trip computer reckons 16mpg.

Thanks everyone for the replies/feedback, all of which is very helpful.
According to the trip computer on my Senny I get approx. 18mpg to a tank which is generally a 10ish mile round trip to work & back + various gym, football, shopping visits. This in turn equates to roughly 300 miles per tank/per month (only do about 5k miles per annum in it) so mpg for a V8 appears about the same if not slightly better (as I expected looking at book figures). I'm not bothered by mpg anyway, I can't be as I already run a 3.0 24v auto & a Lotus Carlton. As far as parts availability & the car being off the road, well Vx aren't resplendent with parts for the Senny so on occasions I am used to having to use the LC as a daily driver.
My original thoughts were of a Monaro (05-07 plate) with no kids a no real need for rear doors but more recently have been pushed (back into the drivers seat quite literally) towards a VXR8 with prices coming down.
All in all its given me the info I was looking for so I can now go away & budget figures & timescales.
Thanks again for the input.
Mike

I've run an LS3 VXR8 and got about 18-19 MPG of normal driving, mostly urban, no track days etc.
I went back to an LS1 5.7 VXR after also owning a LS2 6.0 VXR as I preferred the coupe VXR look to the VXR8 and needed a big boot for prams etc.
I can't remember what the LS2 gave me, but the LS1 is giving me ~16 MPG for the same type of driving as the VXR8.
This isn't a scientific test, but drawn from my memory.
The advantage of a newer car is that there is less of a chance of a big bill needed. The LS3 VXR8 I got at 1500 miles and was pretty sure I could run that at ~4000 miles per year for quite a few years with just servicing. I don't commute in these cars.
The 5.7 VXR as well as being rarer and looking super cool, at 50,000 miles and 8 years old has the chance to offer up a bigger bill at some point, but I'm happy with that risk.
Go in with your eyes open and you won't go wrong.

With all due respect you must have a heavy right foot I admit, most of my commute is motorway but even on a bad day round town with road works etc. i have never averaged 16mpg. Worst I have seen over a tank is 22mpg. If you drive it like you stole it you will obviously see low teens but the same could be said for almost any car.

mikeyb1987 said: It's cost you £6,840 in a year?! Indeed, once you roll everything together, i.e.: maintenance, servicing, petrol, insurance. My 350z would cost an average of just over £6000 per year. Is the VXR8 £800 per year better? Damn right it is. :-)

Winky, I guess you are in the Autobahnstormers? I had two lotus carltons, used them as daily drivers,Had 5.7 vxr Monaro when first luanched, followed by vxr8 6.0 ltr,and now vxr8 6.2 ltr Over 15k miles, with trip computer never being reset,my vxr8 has returned 18.5 mpg. still on original tyres, brakes etc,so only annual services required, and one set of wiper blades. Much cheaper to run than the Lotus.

I'm coming round to realise that fuel cost is the tip of the iceberg - tyres, a clutch etc. can soon out you well into four figure payouts at any time - wouldn't change it for anything, though!
