Looking at pin outs of a adal cable last night I don't think the efi cable will work. Mainly as an adal cable has resistors in it.
It could be that the OBD2 bit requires TTL levels, and the adal cable thing is designed to connect to a normal RS232 level at the PC end, thus the resistors would be needed to lower the voltage?I only suggest this because our traffic counters output at TTL voltages, they connect fine to RS232, but as the voltage is lower you can't run as long a cable without possibly encountering problems, which I found out back in my technical support days...
A suitable USB converter may do the trick

Looks cheap if you're happy with components?
( although you've probably found this already of course )

thats an 84-94 cable not a 95-96 one that we need... have to love GM standards..( although you've probably found this already of course )
