Question for Araf

I don't know how this is done but when I last bought LS pistons from Australia they were sent 'consolidated' freight and arrived on my doorstep foc. I've done this for several years. I've never paid a penny for vat or import duty. Somehow the company in Oz pays for it in advance. Can this be done with the wheels and would it be cheaper?

Yes it can be done (though is rare), but the amount wouldn't be any different, as the money is still paid to Customs here, then charged back by the courier company to the point of origin. You've therefore always paid it, but it's included in the price that you pay.ARAF said:

Is there a time limit for customs to raise charges for something already received from
outside the EU ?
No. However, parcel companies will pay charges when the goods are imported, and will want to recoup that money as soon as possible. If you haven't been billed within a couple of weeks of the goods arriving, then chances are you won't be. outside the EU ?
I've had a few items from outside EU before, but have always had to paid the ransom tax before goods were delivered.
What surprised me with this delivery was the total lack of any customs lables anywhere, and they were not small boxes!,
other things I've had were plastered in dayglow lables indicating charges applicable......

How are things valued? From the sale receipt?
How does it work with second hand goods? Say I bought some lights from ebay.au for $100?
Duty and VAT are calculated from the value of the goods, plus the shipping. Relief from duty and VAT can be claimed. The most popular being if goods are gifts, or mutilated samples (technically this should only be claimed by VAT registered entities). Commercially, if the total value is under £135 then duty is not payable - or if the amount of duty due is under £9 then they don't collect. VAT is due on all goods values over £15How does it work with second hand goods? Say I bought some lights from ebay.au for $100?
