based on its not as short as a 3.9 set and its not as tall as a 3.4 set (also HSV would appear to agree!). Would have thought switching the rear gears would have been an easier option
It's only a 3.7 in the '04 VXR.
indeed, bloody nice it is too

a 3.71 diff would be the optimum
Based on what?

It might have been had I not completely banjaxed the original 'box which nescitated needing a new one laugh

Also the fact I'm running 770 rwtq and the stock T56 doesn't really cope beyond 700 very well so would have meant strengening the 'box anyway (assuming it'd stayed in one piece)

if you manage 178, i'll be putting 50psi in the rear tyres hehe

thats err quite a lot of torque! I take it you are running torque management otherwise the multipliers in 1st to 3rd would be monsterous

You're thinking SC but the way the power comes in with turbos is a lot smoother so isn't as much of a nightmare.

With an M6 or 12 6 th gear being unusable a 3.7 final would result in a far lower terminal speed than the already low 174 achievable on the limiter in 5th.
No time to plot the numbers but I'd guess a 3.7 diff to top out at about 165ish.
Possibly ok for the NA boys thoughsmile

I understand 6th is really a throw back to being a truck gearbox but is 5th really that short with such tall rear gears?

VXR8, 174ish in 5th at 6700rpm
Monaro CV8 185ish in 5th at 6700rpm
Monaro VXR, either version, 174ish in 5th at 6700rpm

Approximates going from memory, not a calculator, assuming you have the grunt to achieve max rpm in that distance.

If you are serious of course you can calculate it out.

i think a cv8 should be closer to 195mph at 6700rpm, standard its 182mph at 6200rpm

185 * (7000/6700) = 193. Assuming Rog's figures.

For a monaro CV8 with a 7000rpm rev limit i get the following numbers

Gear ratios

1st = 2.660 2nd = 1.780 3rd = 1.300 4th = 1.000 5th = 0.740 6th = 0.500 Diff = 3.460

Wheels

235/40/18

1st Gear = 57 mph
2nd Gear = 86 mph
3rd Gear = 118 mph
4th Gear = 153 mph
5th Gear = 207 mph
6th Gear = 306 mph

Now you know why it took me three attempts to get O level maths!

G those figures assume running in a vacuum then?
