Ok, so finally got the Wortec headers and cats ordered for the vxr8, so excited! the car's booked in to have the Walkinshaw exhaust fecked about with as well, so should be sounding a lot louder in no time. I'm also wanting to do a cam as well but it's a minefield of choices, was looking on fleabay and seen this.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HOWARDS-CAMS-LS-LS1-LS2-...

I'm wanting to stay close to the emissions but not to fussed, It just needs to be drivable, and lumpy. any thoughts?

Why don't you just let WP or Monkfish sort it, rely on the experience they offer.

Think you have to go with that cam just for the highly fashionable free gift hehe

Had a browse of the cams available on ebay as well. I just end up completely confused and thats before all the technical specifications are mentioned.

Sorry not a helpful post in the slightest.

I personally wouldn't (and didn't) use eBay as an initial search for a cam. Firstly, you need to decide whether going down the route of choosing your own cam is what you want. Instead, you could just go to Monkfish/WP- it depends on if you're priority is to have a drive in/drive out solution, or whether you want something unique. Also, not knowing the cam specs really annoys me, and is ultimately what stopped me going down that route.

If however, you do decide to go down the route of choosing a cam yourself, I would (and did) start by looking over on the US/Aus forums. Camming is far more popular over there, so there are more people with experience than there is over here. Typical searches for me were 'daily driver LS3 cam', 'California emissions LS3 cam' etc. In the words of Ringram- DYOR wink

I personally spent many hours- hundreds, if not more- on researching my cam choice. I didn't mind doing that, and I think it's definitely paid off- I'm delighted with my set-up biggrin After you choose a cam, you should look at matching valve springs, pushrods etc.

Who is going to do the fitting? Who is mapping the car for you?

What engine do you have? What power are you wanting to achieve? LS2? If so, you could look at a 222/224 size cam (KMud would be a good contact). If it's LS3, look for something around 223/231 or less.

Ringram is a wealth of knowledge on this, and an initial email conversation with him set me off in the right direction.

I would if they were even remotely close to me, but cant as it would mean a massive drive down, drop off the car, flight home, flight back down a few days later and drive home. That alone would cost a small fortune.

222/226 I'll have you know, maybe more like 222/227 according to cam doctor tongue out

As said, US/Aus forums are good, although lots of big cams on the US forums mated to automatic transmissions. If you want a fast answer for a custom cam you can pay Pat Guerra a few bucks for his advice. I like EPS/cam motion, but some good comp lobes.

Ooh- 2 degrees out frown
wink

Mailer- Ben (Kmud) has made a good point: if you see reference to autos needing a higher stall, you can assume it's not as drive-able low down smile

You probably want a wider lsa with an auto
But as a above most cams are low 220 intake duration for sensible daily use..

mine is a manual any way, just been looking at the lunati voodoo full kits, they seem to have a good name. there are 2 profiles I'm looking at, the first is probably the ideal, 222 228 113deg, but if possible I fancy the cam up from that, 227 232 113deg, but that might be to much? there was a vid on youtube of the larger cam and it sounded amazing! would you say the second cam has no chance come emissions time?

is the emissions test the same? or is it the difference between ls1 and ls2 that will make the difference?

its ok, I'm not overly fussed about emissions anyway, got that covered, its more that the car needs to be derivable and I dont want to put to big a cam in that it creates problems with other areas like needing to do work to the heads.
