Had a slightly alarming experience yesterday in the Monaro. Was heading back down the M4 when a sudden blast of smoke of the 'burning electric component' variety came pouring out of the drivers-side face vent. Quickly started to pull over, expecting to have to bale out and watch the inevitable conflagration, but as suddenly as it had started the smoke stopped and normal service resumed. Maybe sudden swearing extinguished it. Weird. Just wondering what it could be? The outside temp was 31 degrees and I had the A/C on 'C' so that was working quite hard I guess – maybe momentary belt slip or something? Odd that it was coming from just the one vent too.

Didn't recur on the rest of the drive home, but think I'll invest in an extinguisher.

Needs investigating, could be from the fuse box area.

You cannot go wrong with a fire extinguisher, every car should have one, I think it ought to be the law as in Europe.

Hope you sort it.

Don't get a fire extinguisher, as you might be tempted to deal with a burning car, rather than run away. And an extinguisher in the cabin is a heavy object to break free and rattle around if you crash. I had a built in fire extinguish with remote pull and pipes into the engine bay. It was smashed to bits and useless in a crash.

Don't bother is my advice. First sign of fire stop, get out, call us (Fire Brigade) out...

Sound words Arnie from someone who obviously knows of what the speak. But it would be pretty heartbreaking to just stand there and watch the old girl burn, after all we've been through.

I'll get the guys at MF to give it a good check over, it needs booking in anyway.

Yep, mounted in that clip on the left. Unsure what type of extinguisher it is, hopefully a powder one so suitable for all types of fire (and hilariously messy, if effective!)

If the fire is bigger than a lit match, you'll be in trouble with the extinguisher that's in a Monaro boot !!!! hehe

I have never seen this extinguisher, or the clip. Maybe it's just a VXR thing?

Maybe it is, my 55 plate VXR came with one in the back left of the boot if that helps. Hoping it isn't needed...!

I bought my small boot Monaro from Drive in Bristol new. There was an extinguisher loose in the boot, kind of sits in a dip on the left side.

I think they said it was a legal requirement for a new car to have one, March 2005.

Funnily enough, bought mine from there as well - had to travel from Kent to get it, nice to know they'd dealt with Monaro's before.
I always keep a fire extinguisher in the boot, along with a first aid kit - saying that, probably all well past their date stamps.....
