Oil temps !!??

Gearbox cooler is a must if your going to use the power,i fitted a larger cooler to mined and took the origenal pipe work that runs through the rad out of the loop ,as to engine cooler a mocal take of valve and 90 deg inline stat put in,gauge before fitting would show 115/120 after cooler 105 average on gauge

Cheers, Pretty much as expected. If you lucky Araf, the stock lines to the rad cooler are often long enough to move around to a side mounted ATX cooler
There are also these below available but I prefer proper Stacked Plate design rather than the tube/fin style

We can have a nosey at TR and see if theres place for a nice decent ATX cooler on yours.

fk me Kaw, wish you had just said this in the first place!
Do you have any thermostatic control with yrs or do you run it as delivered?
I said it could be done for around £300 ..not far off at all Do you have any thermostatic control with yrs or do you run it as delivered?

and a little something for ARAF although we would need to check what stock fittings are on the atx box first.

As above though, did you add a thermostat later as the kit doesn't state the adapter has an integrated one like the USA one does ?

All good info there guys, where did you situate the coolers if you don't mind me asking? As with a blower you've got a charge cooler rad & pipe work cluttering up the space behind the grille already
Looking at Kaw's previous thread (Sept 2012), I think his are behind the fog lights, as he also has a supercharger fitted. captainblakk said:

So far Im still in the investigating stage but it seems somewhere in front of the rad is the only place on these. kaw said:
Gearbox cooler is in front of charge cooler and engine oil cooler behined fog light s and theres a cut out in the front air dam to direct air in the cooler ,and i,m pretty sure i,ve said all this before but no one was intested then lol
And thermostatic control for the engine cooler?kaw said:

No one seemed to be interested when I used to say about temps on our old red car. Monkfish were looking into whether the Camaro cooler, on the side of the sump, could be retro-fitted to the VXR8. I shut up, when I thought the gauge was actually wrong, after using an IR thermometer at Bedford Autodrome. I think that was 2011, just before I blew the engine and gearbox at Cottesmore. With that expense, non-essential spend on the VXR8 went on the back-burner for a while, and because I had the reassurance of the independent temp ready, I lost interest. For me, it's only because I've used the Ute on track that this problem has again raised its head.
Now, it's a bit like the Emperors New Clothes. Everyone has noticed high temps at some time, but haven't said.
For me the temps have always been a concern. I noticed the gauge sitting at 110 on the test drive but was a little more relaxed once I figured out that's where its always sat. While not ideal I could live with the fact a big V8 runs a little hot, however when gauge rose to 130 on a little push I decided there is no ways Im living with that !!
Soon I see a flurry of R8's fitting oil cooler

I do a lot of work on control systems for big engines and always have problems with oil temp, the oil can hold the temp and not mix , so you can get clumps of hot oil moving past the senders causing the oil temp to go up and down, so we alter the sampling rate to stabilize the oil temp readings and we never use them as a shutdown as they are not stable enough. water temps on some of the new engines can get up to 130 C as they are pressurized, some of the new cars i have driven don't even show water temp or oil temp any more, as if they showed the real temps everyone would panic.
my point was that when you see the oil temp at 130 c the water temp (on mine )hasn't moved its under a 1/4 of the range still 3/4 to go before it overheats.

I admire your optimism, but as the water gauge has no scale, and doesn't register until the water is already quite hot, I doubt it would take much of a temperature rise to move the needle to the danger zone.Gassing Station | HSV & Monaro | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
