This is what had been done to mine when I bought it, no idea how effective it is but seen similar on older Holdens....

Great idea that I'll tap into (except for small cone). But. Needs an insulating plate to stop hot air being dragged in from the engine bay.
Strap looks a bit S&M?
I'd also say that having the cone's blanking plate end close to the cold air feed is a good way of closing off the supply - though that could just be the angle of the photo.

No, it's open at the end no blanking panel is blocking the air flow

I believe Araf is referring to the solid cap on the small end of the cone filter, he has a point, the principle of the set up is good, but could do with an adjustment here and there.

So am I, there is no plate it's hollow inside the filter so the air flow is not obstructed. It closes off about 3 inches inside the filter.

Agree it needs some tweaks but unfortunately so does the house, but feedback very helpful thank you all.

I assume the filter is like this:

I love this forum, I didn't know this type of filter was available until now smile

That's the one! :-) Except the small end is shiny and silver, an important feature

I assume while the cone is slightly smaller is should have increased airflow from this type of opening?

That type of of filter will definitely provide decent airflow in that set up, more filter material must equal more airflow, although I could be wrong, any scientists out there willing to confirm either way ?

I've ordered one of these. Very excited to fit it. I wonder if it is worth making up a cold air feed from the lower grill aswell.

Is it easy enough to get a heat shield on it's own, or am I going to have to fabricate one? Had a quick Google couldn't see anything obvious....

I was thinking of modding the K&N into something similar...I'm just wondering whether I'd mod it so hard I might as well start from scratch. I'm leaning toward the 6.0 version for the larger pipe diameter and ability to locate the IAT sensor where I like, but would have to extend the pipe to bridge the MAF.

I noticed my foglights are a little manky around the edges. Tempted to mod the lower grille now...

Copy the link and try opening it offsite (may have to refresh a couple of times), I think there's some leech protection on the image.

Looks quite good. There is a lower feed anyway, its built in, or should be.

The main lesson to learn from cold air intakes is filter area! 6.05cfm/sq inch of filter. (K&N filter flow stats)
You will want a bare minimum of around 1.7cfm per rwhp, which is roughly 2cfm per fwhp.

With 1 lost kPa worth close to 1% power while 1*C is "only" worth about 0.3% power its intake restriction that kills.
Just like having a throttle that wont go fully open.

So 600bhp = 1200cfm = 189 sq inches required.

http://keisan.casio.com/has10/SpecExec.cgi?id=syst...

Working from the rotofab G8 intake height of 8", Top cone of 5 and bottom of 7.5 gives 220sq inches or 1331cfm
Compare that with your otr panel filters...

Its not exact, but it gets you in the ballpark.

Another thing to check is intake manifold pressure vs atmospheric at full throttle. If they are not the same you have an intake restriction, could be throttle, maf, filter or pipework..

Buying based on anything else is just random.

I have been looking at CAI kits and wonder, when fitted, what happens when you give the old girl a hard stab on the go pedal and the block moves on it's mountings, I don't see any flexibility built into the kits to allow for side to side movement of the block. The bog standard intake tube on my LS2 Ro appears to have a section that will allow a concertina effect, does anyone know if the concertina section of the intake tube is there to allow for side to side movement of the block ?

Assuming that the owner is looking for a performance increase. For some, it's aesthetics. wink

They usually have a softer silicon or rubber connector between CAI and throttle body.

this is the one I went for on the VXR8, its a Vararam OTR CAI. came from the states and was a great price compared to anything over here, not sure if anyone else is running this but I think it works just fine, it also gets a good review in the states.

I have edited the post now everyone should be able to see the pic. Good news about the lower feed, why have I seen a couple of people put a tube in the lower grill then? Is it just cosmetic?
