I've found loads of information regarding speakers and stereos in the Monaro, removal, upgrading etc etc. What I can't seem to find is the subwoofer size of the standard subs and their possible replacement options. Does anyone know off the top of their head?

Quick answer is they are 6" and very little (if any) in the way of replacement the same size.

You can go bigger but will need to fabricate some spacers for them, easy enough, just time consuming.

I assume you have doen the old "turn the amp up" in the boot trick ?

I changed all the door speakers in my old Monaro "well Ferret did hehe" and left the subs alone, changing those for better ones made a big difference and I felt no need to much around with the subs after that smile

Changed mine out for Infinity speakers, well the effort. Still had to modify the front speaker pods and rear speaker mounts tho !

The subs are 6.5" I believe. I have already done the front 6 speakers, and have ordered the subs to go in (although I don't have an amp yet). I have opted for 8" speakers (Kicker 40CWS84), which may take some fettling to fit but the housing has a steep angle which should ease matters.

For what it's worth I was fine with the OE subs, they were just making a crackling noise when I first turn on the stereo that I can't abide (probably due to being 2 ohm when my head unit is 4+ ohm).

Personally I'm going 12" fibreglass back corner and remove the existing for ventilation into the cabin, can't see the point of mucking around with the original just too small to get proper bass response from. Corners of the Munro are wasted anyway with the boot hinges best custom something to get proper extension.. . .

Instead of subs you could install some very nice speakers in there instead for even more sound. It depends how that would all balance out.

See I am considering doing the same with a 12w7 I have now. Used to doing fibreglass boxes etc. Although I had an idea with putting a pair of Sundown SA8V2's on the rear deck and building a box attached to the deck. Reckon it could be done while keeping it stealthy and a pair of SA8's can be bloody loud.

I'm not of the 'wub wub' persuasion, but if I wanted to put a honking big speaker in a monaro I'd look into hiding it behind the rear side panels, there's loads of room in there. A few people on ls1gto have gone down this route.

Just to add, don't get those Kickers, the pictures everyone seems to use to advertise them show them as cone shaped, but they are really more like barrels...no way they are going into the rear deck!

I've got Infinity components up front and co-axs in the rear "doors" in my Ro.

The fronts will need spacers made from 6mm MDF, and even with thwese the fitting is quite tight and the door card just fits over the speaker.

The pods in the rear need modifying as well. Best to try and find a shallow mount depth speaker where possible.

I've also got a JVC head unit in mine as well and I'm happy with the upgrade in functionality and sound quality in the car now. I didn't bother with the subs as I couldn't be arsed with making the spacers, I'm happy with the audio set up although I may change to a full touch screen head unit in the future if I have nothing else to waste my money on (unlikely at the moment!).
