Haha! You blew the camera over? That's ace! So that's essentially just without the cats then?

Yeah the camera didn't hold up!!! It is funny. So that's a wortec with no cats. I did have the centres removed but it was too droney.

aahhhh... the Wortec.

there in lies the dilemma... i have the stock system (although not currently fitted...) so wondering if anyone has had any luck/experience with simply removing the various silencers/mufflers from the stock setup... centers/back box... (both?...eek) or maybe just fitting some high flow cats?

I love the sound of the wortec and i do appreciate that i can't expect to get the same thing at a fraction of the cost BUT until that day comes (if it comes..) there must be a way of enhancing this V8 without remortgaging my house? biggrin

I have a modified VXR 5.7 LS1 exhaust and headers on my 04 CV8.

The exhaust has smaller than standard centre boxes and no rear boxes at all. It's fairly loud (102.7DB at 3/4 max revs), and does drone at the usual Monaro revs (about 1800rpm), but it's not too bad (on par with my previous cars with non-standard exhausts).

Long pipe runs are best avoided if you don't want drone, hence I'll probably get a pair of small rear boxes installed again, or maybe an x pipe to see what effect that has.

I disagree that you need spend a fortune to get a comparable sound.

From all cars that I have modified exhausts on. I find removing centres will cause a drone. The question is if the drone is at cruising speed.

At the end of the day a stock exhaust issue is down to the way it silences that means you can only remove them to make it louder. Better designed boxes is the way to go. Many universal options there. If they are not 100% repack them a little. Or unpack them!

Then as mentioned a quarter pipe to tune to sound. (Which is where a lot if R&D lies) it's not a neat but simple.

Advice from the forum was to remove the middle boxes. I luckily bought this system off eBay which already had none, which I recently found out is a stock Pontiac GTO system. Good balance of volume and quality, doesn't drone.

Since fitting a Walkinshaw sport exhaust to my VXR8 I'm struggling with the drone !! :-(

It occurs bwtween 1500 and 1900 rpm, so the revs that correspond to just below 70 mph on motorway or the speed that you travel at in mixed traffic, whatever the auto box selects.

I'm not sure if I'll keep it long term, especially as I have a daily 2 x 47 mile commute in the car.

Yeah, I'm wondering if that's worth trying... although that looks like a different system to what I have on my 04 CV8? mine looks similar to this but rather than those little boxes behind the cats, I have a single common backbox...

I'm wondering if it's worth replacing the center boxes with an X pipe... and keep the back box.

I have an 04 CV8 with the Wortec cat-back, with the middle silencers removed. It's on stock headers/cats. I think it sounds amazing, with a little drone on throttle load, but not over bearing. I am reliably informed that it's pretty loud too and makes a very angry V8 noise from some distance away when 'pushing on'.
My commute is mixed A roads - lots of accelerating/decelerating (an accompanying pops and bangs), so no long constant steady state cruising which is when you tend to get lots of droning. Depends on what sort of journeys/driving you regularly do to how much you might be affected by droning.

anyone wanting a decent sound needs to copy whatever Mr CV8 has on his set up, it is by far and away the best ever sounding monaro or vxr8

Cue Mr CV8's response... biggrin

Having said that, I not necessarily after the best out there... I just want my v8 to sound like a v8! (Without dropping £1k!)

Then you want to speak to Mr CV8 and ask him what his set up is as there is no monaro or vxr8 that sounds as good as his. And its a CV8 so was probably done in the cheap too

That is a very wrong assumption to make. He doesn't skimp on that car, and I would think he has the best there is.

it was a very tongue in cheek comment! That car is by far the best sounding car on this forum and yet we never understand why. Spoke to him and still we couldn't conclude exactly what it was that made it sound so good!

Probably hasn't heard yours since the decat, but don't take it as an insult. From memory, yours has an urgent bark - very racecar-esque, whereas MrCV8's is more of a bellow. Different sounds, and so which is best is very subjective.

I've heard enough variations of the wow I'm loud exhausts to know I am confident in stating that I would be shocked if anything sounds better than Mr CV8's. Its only opinion but his is just spot on, so much so that my mrs said exactly the same - it just sounds perfect.

his isn't offensive like some loud ones, it isn't too sharp it isn't too deep its just right

James's does sound good. You know how a 2-stroke is crisp? This is the V8 equivalent. Sounds tuned to the pipe, and purposeful. smile

Urgent bark eh? I like the sound of that! (like the description too) any sound clips per chance?
