At 230 mph Chevy Corvette alloy wheel breaks on a high speed run.

How good are your preps for your speed runs?

I do not mean to cause aggravation for those of you who do these high speed runs. However, I do not want to read about bad news one day.

This driver was extremely lucky to walk away.

I would like to hear others views on this subject.

Does look like a lightweight wheel. Did it hit anything?

Are those stock wheels...? Seem a little bling to me for transmitting close to 2000hp!! When your at that level all areas need to be considered and uprated.
When I was into bikes we have discs exploding at over 240mph as people where jumping on then and spot heating the standard setup causing them to crack.
Glad the guy walked away though, he was very lucky!!

You can only prepare so much though.

Clearly a wheel breaking is a rare occurrence.

A puncture would be more likely, and could be almost as devastating.

Not so sure about the tyre, it looks like a drag radial, and I thought most of those yank events didnt allow such tyres for the high speed long distance work ?

Wonder which bit failed first, outer rim, spokes, maybe a puncture causing severe wheel wobble then fracture ?

That's what I thought.

Whilst the vid shows the wheel badly damaged (could easily have been caused by the crash), there is no other evidence that the crash was caused by the wheel failing catastrophically.

Makes you realise the value of a properly specified roll cage, 5-point harness and protective clothing. Can't see anyone walking away from a crash without a well sorted safety set-up.

Agree, however, it's the human body that does not like fast deceleration, they reckon Jules Bianchi suffered a 91G force on his head in his crash which was taken from a reading on his ear piece !

True, but when you see some cage and other rules in the US, they do seem bonkers too

Parachutes are another grey area, which can seem to cause accidents !!

Some guys posting pics of US legal cages, with removable door bars etc.

Removable at both ends of a diagnol door bar, door bars with bends in them etc....they just seem mental ! WTF use is a roll cage with a bent bar in a key area and 2 hinges at either end lol
