Brakes ( AP on VXR8 )
Discussion
So let's talk brakes. (AP's to be exact)
I had a really bad judder from the whole car while braking, WP diagnosed that all four discs needed replacing.
I had all 4x discs replaced by MF, and for a while all was fine, 1500 miles in and now just slightly there is a judder reappearing, so as you know a set of 4 discs isn't cheap, at well over a grand fitted and the last thing I want to do is replace them all again.
Tie rod ends have been checked and are fine, Ball joints have been checked and are fine, in fact the whole suspension has been checked and again came back as been fine.
Thought about changing pads to Ferodo DS3000 as I have a set, and see if this helps in any way, as I understand the car can suffer with pad deposit, but worried about squealing brakes. ( Currently have DS2500, but interesting to note, no markings on the pads to proof it. )
At my wits end with this stupid brake judder problem.
Ideas/Thoughts most welcome.
P.S Based in the deep dark North so popping down to WP again or Monk Fish again isn't the easiest thing in the world to do.
How hard do you normally drive the car, and how often/far do you drive it etc?
I find that the brakes on mine will exhibit judder if I've been driving like a granddad for a long period of time, like through the winter. 20 minutes of trashing the heck out of them fixes it for me
I understand that these brakes are designed based on motorsport brakes, and so really need to be given some stick every now and then.

I've got this on my Monaro also that has APs. Tried the sharp braking a few times and whilst better it hasn't cleared it, and occurs front and back. Suspension seems fine no knocks or bangs. I'm also not keen to replace the discs as I've seen the cost, and whilst I'm happy to DIY this it's a cost I could do without. Apart from this the car drives great but is really beginning to annoy me. Don't sit on the brake pedal at all at lights etc, car is kept in garage but is a daily driver rain or shine. Where discs replaced with AP or another brand ?
It does seem to be a long standing and common problem with Monaro and now VXR8 ?
It almost seems as if the metal they use on the discs, are just woefully suitable for road use.
It would be nearly worth replacing the discs with an alternative brand. ANy reports from people who have tried ?
Reyland Motorsport offers some generic discs and much cheaper than AP's

As most probably dont push the racing discs to their limits anyway, a cheaper alternative would hardly hurt things

Kiwi1 I have the same problem at the moment with my AP brakes on my Bathurst,Its going to WP next week for a service but guessing will advise new discs based on your comments.I was looking to see if possible to get them skimmed? Can I ask what part no for DS3000 pads you have as would prefer to use these over the DS2500.The DS3000 were brilliant in my Clio Cup road car compared to the Ds2500.I have never done any track days so with 18K currently on the clock they have not lasted that well .
APs whilst good for the road they do need looking after eg:
Bed the pads in carefully, no bks about 10 hard stops and then 5 soft etc etc.
Don't clean the car then leave it sat there as the discs will rust.
You need to get the wheels off occasionally and give the calipers and discs a really good clean, inc the grooves and any holes.
Don't get the brakes hot then sit with yr foot on the brake.
Don't use cheap pads.
Never had an issue on my old Ro or VXR8 and use both very hard at times. Just remember it's not a Mondeo yr dealing with here so don't treat it like one.

Tried to clear the build up but has not worked, and Neil had a good look yesterday and there is little if any build up at all on the discs.
I've got DS2500 in mine all round, so it looks like I'll be changing the pads at some point as the vibrations are still there. May skim the discs at the same time just to be sure.
Have to say that if I'd paid the money for these (the entire system) I'd be very disappointed, luckily they were on the car when I bought it. Not really good enough, but there you go.

My personal opinion probably goes against the grain here but I feel the AP's are overkill for a road car driven sensibly. I find I never have to use any real braking pressure on the pedal to stop even from decent speeds.
I dont drive like a loon on the road.. thats what tracks are for. So for me the brake deposit build up on the discs is a nightmare. Our car had new discs and pads all round just before we bought it, after 3000 road miles the slight judder appeared. Its not got any worse and isnt bad, more annoying under very light braking.
I may opt for something softer than the DS2500's in there currently.

It's odd - never had an issue with DS2500's or now the pad I swear by: Pagid RS29
Disc wise , I've cracked an OE, an EBC and melted a set of EBC Yellows - worst pads I've ever come across.
I'm now running the two piece dba up front and not managed to break them in year (although even with the far superior heat dissipation, cracks are now appearing).
Really don't think there's a common cause
