I knew there had been trials as I'd spoken to the sales reps a few years back
The photo is interesting as the stand is totally unsuitable as the sound will be transmitted mechanically through it (a suspended stand or at the very least a thick low density foam pad should be used to isolate it from the ground).
I note that it's being used with an xlr cable which I would severely doubt that that will have been calibrated at all.
The measurements should be carried out using the C Weighting scale (as used for public performance) to give any form of real world meaningfulness.
Something else I hadn't initially considered is that measurements taken on a dual exit system will be affected by the other set of pipes when measured from a single point.

So is the officer in the story really saying that a fully OEM set-up car which is in good working order will be crushed if it has an exhaust that is noisier than 80 (or 90) decibels? I really can't see that happening. It would be interesting to get a stock Monaro and VXR8 tested, to see how noisey they are.
That said, I agree that really loud exhausts are a nuisance and that there is no need for them. I've never felt inclined to buy something that shakes my neighbours out of their beds in the morning. Bit too antisocial for my liking.
Must get the VT2 tested...
The vt2 is a true import so that helps. I got pulled for no reason other than he can't read a number plate and once I was clear tried to warn me on my exhaust. He said if he got under the car it was likely not a bs stamped exhaust and illegal. That said, I agree that really loud exhausts are a nuisance and that there is no need for them. I did take pleasure in telling him he was right its not likely to be stamped. But that is fine as the car is no eu approved. He luckily understood that and looked miffed and let me go on my merry way with a warning it was loud and attract attention. No mention it was too loud.
Is it any wonder people hate the cops.
On one hand you hear stories of thousands of kids being sexually exploited in the news in the UK and the cops ignoring it all...not just over weeks, but years of reports.
And then you hear cops trying to nail a car owner doing and causing no harm to anyone, for what they claim is a loud exhaust.
Seriously....WTF
How have we in the UK let the legal system get this way ?
Cops at both ends of those scales should not have that job !

I don't mind cops saying "In my opinion, your exhaust is loud" but do take offence at them trying to quantify and justify what they are saying, with bullsh!t. ARAF said:

Unfortunately all motoring laws are twisted and distorted so things like that are taken as fact. And we've allowed it to happen !!
We need a revolution !
And to my way of thinking they should be looking to mop up dangerous aspects of motoring first, for example - HEADLIGHTS, TAILIGHTS AND BRAKELIGHTS!!!!! a broken headlamp bulb, no taillights or non-working brake lights are clearly dangerous to other road users!!!! A burble in your pipe is not!!!!

The point is :-
Every exhaust system and silencer shall be maintained in good and efficient working order and shall not be altered so as to increase the noise made by the escape of exhaust gases."
If you have modified your exhaust and it has made it the noise of escaping gas louder then you are in contravention of this.
S59's are for exactly this (and scrotacrossers riding where they shouldnt)
Okay, but what if the new exhaust is a complete swap, and it's louder than OEM.Every exhaust system and silencer shall be maintained in good and efficient working order and shall not be altered so as to increase the noise made by the escape of exhaust gases."

It's in working order, and I've not "altered the exhaust" at all (I've not drilled holes, or welded a whistle in the end).

its a law intended to address motorbikes and mopeds which have a visual bs/e stamp check but you cannot legistlate by saying a v8 is exempt because it sounds right
Didn't mention anything about exempting V8's, was just saying that IMO, most bikes are far louder than the majority of cars on the road, so the BIB would do better concentrating on those instead.stigmundfreud said:

It's just a pile of bks that they waste our bloody hard extorted taxes on !It's keeping useless assholes in a job dreaming up stupid legislation to fine people for doing no harm, and then to make those assholes feel good about it all as if they've done something useful.
Sack the bloody lot of them !They are parasites and have nothing to offer society

I am for the law, there is nothing nicer than a large CC engine on loud pipes but when you hear 1.2 corsa's or ANY motorbike with open pipes they just sound awful.
When laws are stupid and abused, then there is no place for such laws.Asking someone to rev the crap out of their car to make noise, when they werent driving like that, they werent making excessive noise etc is just stupid.
That's like stopping and asking you to drive over the nearest pedestrian....just because you might have done given a chance.
