Hi all,
Pulled over today by the police on the motorway. Sitting and waiting smugly knowing Ive done nothing wrong and I spotted him following me a mile or so back.

Wanted me to go to the station, rev my R8 and hold it at 4k so he could put a decibel tester on it! If too loud then he would instruct me to put standard pipes back on!

I explained I was busy and on my way somewhere, and that I had owned the car for just over 4 years from when I purchased it, with the current set up from a main dealership, and I hadn't changed anything.

Im running it with headers and Wortec set up.

Anyone else had this issue recently, and what have you done about it?

Is installing electronic switchable set up an option?

Thanks

For that reason it is a must to have cut outs, not permanant set up,so if police or MOT switch to quiet, Simplessss.

Quite!! The opposite of a Tesler!!!

It is a bit of a worry though as most of us are running Wortec / Walkinshaw or similar! I would guess 80-90% of us are not on standard pipes?

Have you still got to take the car to the station and have it checked?

So did he let you away or what happened ?

It's still a grey area, although newer cars may have a dB listing somewhere on their V5, and if you're far above that then when an actual law is passed and you exceed it, you will have issues.
But pretty sure there is still no proper legislation in force where specific dB readings are used and enforced.

But there are generic terms like any deviation from the manufacturers standard can be deemed illegal, or any modifications to increase noise etc.
Or the cop can just state excessive noise, which is a typical anti-motorist law that throws the onus onto the motorist to prove their innocence.
All of those rules have been around for decades.

I had a copy of the study looking into decibel measurement that was done a few years ago, cant seem to find it now though

There have been threads on the topic though, so it's certainly not a new issue.

If he called round my house and asked me to hold it at 4k from cold Id tell him to take a hike and I then ask for his details and registered office so I could complain about his poor attitude and that I felt threatened, also mentioning that I would seek legal advce about feeling victimised and intimidated at my own home.

If your doing burn outs in public and 6k revs through town then fair enough, cruising on the motorway... Get a life officer!

Interesting article Stevie - still seems to leave it all open ended though and at the discretion of the officer in question!

Section 59 is the easy option for them. Go switchable if you are concerned.

Quite!!! This island is becoming something of a nanny state isn't it!! Whats the point of having a V8 if you cant hear it?

yes

Not everyone wants to hear exhaust noises, however nice we think they are, so that makes them antisocial.

I'd be interested to know how he intends to measure the noise at your home, as buildings nearby will affect the reading.
