A friend who was following me this morning commented that my Monaro's exhaust looked a bit wobbly. I had a look this evening and quickly found out why:

Looks to me like it's failed where the mount meets the exhaust, so will require welding to repair. Given that I'm one of the few still running a standard exhaust and given that said exhaust looks pretty corroded all the way down, I'd expect welding would only be a temporary fix. Therefore, my mind has started to wander into upgrade territory.

I see that Monkfish do a Wortec catback system for around £900 (fitted I assume). This is towards the top end of what I'd like to pay so what are my other options within reasonable travel of the midlands?

I'm not really looking for something noisy, it would be nice to have a little more V8 noise, but at the same time, this is my daily and I want to remain on good terms with my neighbours, so don't want anything too shouty.

I have the wortec on my 5.7 vxr. Have just fitted the noisy pipes which while sounding amazing I don't think I can live with as the drone at 2000rpm is liable to give permanent hearing damage. However the silenced pipes or quiet are very nice and usable daily without drone. You get a nice burble and the pops and bangs on overrun but it's not too shouty unlike the noisy pipes which are pure nascar.

Most exhaust places will be able to build a system for you. Keep a decent size centre box as this cuts down any drone which is a killer to live with!
Where are you based?

I disagree. The drone is produced by the rear box(es) from what I've found with our VXR8 and Ute.

Does your System have Finishing tips..?

Moving these by as little as an inch in or out can make a surprising difference in Resonance wink

I've chopped and changed exhausts recently so will comment tomorrow with a proper keyboard. Has been a long day today!

I live just outside Coventry, so anywhere within an hour or so of there would be good.

Any thoughts on Magnaflow exhausts? Seem fairly popular in the US on Pontiac GTOs. Similarly, do Walkinshaw still do exhausts for Monaros? What sort of noise level & price am I to expect from either of these?

It has twin pipes on one side. The tips are rolled and fixed to exhaust in a chrome finish. I will see if they can be moved, but they protrude from bumper by a couple of inches. I have now done 100 miles with the loud pipes and they give me a headache. I will be booking on next week to have the quiet pipes put back on which are not as exciting sounding but still good.

I've got the 5.7 VXR model, so my comments relate to that. It has shorty headers as standard.

So, when I bought the car, I noticed that it had a stainless exhaust of some description, although at the time I didn't know what it was. It later transpired to be an early version of the now loved Wortec. This was a cat back system, with small-ish centre boxes and a rear silencer. Sounded nice, not that loud and/or anti social, a little quiet for my liking but a decent sound nevertheless. No drone at all. This also has a kiss type X pipe just behind the cats on my car.

I then managed to acquire the changeable part of this set up that you get with the new system, ie instead of the centre boxes, you get a set of straight through pipes. I had this on the car for around 18 months or so - it was loud, I liked it but there was some drone at legal motorway speeds - I don't do much motorway driving day to day so not an issue for me. The centre silencers then sat in my garage and the spiders that lived in them paid me no rent.

So I wanted something a little "more", and in line with any potential future power upgrade plans, I got in on the group buy that Richard organise on the FB site, and got myself a set of 1 7/8 headers with hi flow cats as well as an entire new exhaust system as this was needed so it would all bolt up nicely with no welding required.

I put this all on last week, the Pacemaker system, from the cats back, has centre boxes, but a changeable part at the back to remove the rear silencer(s). Went with the loud option when I installed it all last week, and I got a nice burble as I've already commented. No droning at motorway speeds at all. Nice, decent sound, not loud and/or offensive. I didn't try the rear silencers, these were not really needed unless you want to be a Toyota Prius perhaps. Note that both the Wortec and the Pacemaker are 2.5" systems.

I've gone back to the Wortec (turns out it uses the same fixings as the Wortec) as I like my car to be loud and offensive. I'm currently running the centre boxes in and even with the LT headers, no drone! I'll be changing it over to the straight through pipe at some point next week. The Pacemaker I've decided to sell and have a buyer lined up, although if this does fall through (unlikely) you can have second dibs (although I'm in Kent so a bit of a trek for you).

In essence, on the Monaro, in my experience, removing the centre boxes will cause droning regardless of the header situation. By going this route you will get a nice loud V8 sound, but be warned it's not to everyone's taste and you might get the neighbours annoyed if you go this route. By keeping the centre boxes you will get a noise that is still very good, but much more liveable with day to day.

I hope this helps.

Vince, I am surprised you're going to take the silencers out, though seriously, straight through makes so much more loudness, it sounds epic, but it rattles your teeth.........

I've got straight through pipes on my 5.7 vxr, no silencers at all. Just the standard manifold and cats and it sounds great when either on the throttle of off popping and banging but the drone on the motorway is a nightmare! I keep wondering if I should change it for an exhaust with at least one silencer to help stop the drone. I have emailed Walkinshaw but no reply as yet. I keep meaning to try and make a show so I can hear some other peoples car to see what I think would be best but I always seem to be busy.

The thing is, you only get the drone at partial throttle,on the motorway, so meeting up wouldn't really prove anything.

True but would it would still be nice to hear some other systems before I put my hand in my pocket as it's a lot of money to spend and then decide its not what I wanted afterwards.

Try ebay.com - the 2004 Pontiac GTO cat-back should fit:
