Actually, given the offence was in or near Cambridge I reckon refurbishment of the Caxton Gibbet may be appropriate.

The present one is missing its iron cage and head clamping device.

The period of display next to the road should be approximately two weeks, perhaps reduced in summer if flies become a nuisance for patrons of the public house.

More seriously, I think there is a good chance the perps will be caught somewhere down the line, so long as it hasn't been exported without paperwork.

Would assume due to the way it was taken, different plates would have been fitted very quickly to avoid such detection

The Police had it recovered and have been doing forensics on it.

Half of me is aligned with the above posts - great that it has been recovered, and awesome if they've caught the scumbags.
