I have just returned from a trip from the North east to Cornwall and back in my Monaro, during this time it was clunking like crazy when moving off and changing gear.
I have had both the ring gear and LSD replaced last year, (truetrac installed)
I have also replaced the drivers side half shaft as there was some play in the U/joint. The passenger half shaft is not too bad at the moment.
Now the rear of the drive train is OK, that leaves the gear box end. So has anyone had their T56 rebuilt and as a result have they found that the backlash in the prop shaft has been reduced?
I checked the prop today and it seems OK, but there is a massive amount of rotation on the prop and it clunks from the gearbox tail shaft end. can this be sorted out?

regards John

I have had my trutrac fitted a number of years. I have always had a bit of clunking but I was told the tolerance are not the best in the world. I was told if I didn't like the clunk it would be replaced with oe diff free of charge

The trutrac is fine as my car was clunking before I had that and the diff changed.
I'm convinced the problem is with the huge amount of backlash in the prop shaft which has been there since I've had the car.
I forgot to mention that last week I was waiting to pull out at a T-junction. This particular junction was on a very steep incline...and i'm talking a Thunderbird 2 take off angle..I take you all remember Thunderbird's.. anyway I held the car for a few seconds on the clutch and pulled away, in doing so I herd a horrible scraping noise coming from the clutch gearbox area, I'm wondering if that is related or a separate issue.

Afternoon smile
Just came across this thread when having a quick google. Sounds like I'm having very similar problems.
Have you managed to get this fixed (or improved) yet?

I've recently had clutch and spigot bearing replaced on mine which hasn't made any difference.

I resorted to some very expensive CV joints (supplied and fitted by Monkfish) to cure the clunking from my driveshafts.

I initially had clunking from the diff - took the opportunity to fit a 3.7 diff and ensured correct mix of oil and friction modifier.

Then clunking from the half-shafts - fitted G-force drive shafts which made things worse, only then finally resolved by fitting some GNK CV joints.

I'd be looking closely at the drive-shafts and central prop UJ before taking the gearbox apart!
