Hi folks,

I need the propshaft centre bearing replacing. I see monkfish do a repair kit:

http://www.monkfishperformance.co.uk/propshaft-cen...

Does anyone know what is included in the kit? I presume a new bearing!

There is talk (over the pond) as to how replacing the bearing is impossible, and many simply switch to a one-piece prop. However, I have found an old post on here where it has been done:

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=1&a...

So, my two questions are:
1) Can it be replaced with relative ease (I'm assuming it must be if Monkfish sell a replacement kit)
2) What are people's thoughts on one-piece shafts? I vaguely remember a few on here suggesting they can cause vibrations.

For info, a garage will be doing the work. The one-piece prop I was looking at was:

http://www.driveshaftshop.com/domestic-driveshafts...

or, a two piece:

http://www.driveshaftshop.com/domestic-driveshafts...

Ideally, I don't want to spend money on a prop when all it needs is a centre bearing smile

Thanks

Mike

I have that driveshaft. It fit straight in no problem, some bits needed some clearancing around it (seat belt bolt ends, edge of an exhaust hanger, some no longer used heat shield)

I have only been 70mph officer, but I have made an extremely educated guess that says it was fine at about 140mph ish.

From what Garreth has said though, vibration is only likely to rear its head with that prop over 150mph if it's going to at all, so I can't guarantee you won't ave problems at Thunder Road for example...

Otherwise it's a great piece though smile

According to this the CF driveshaft will typically have a higher fundamental frequency (resonant frequnecy of first flexural mode), so you may be golden (until you add a 500 shot of nitrous...hehe).

Is it the carbon shaft you have James (I linked to two in my original post)? If so, and after reading your and Ben's comments, I'm tempted to get one biggrin

Andy from MF has got back to me and said the bearing can be replaced, but it can prove difficult. If it is going to be a pain to change it, I'll be getting the carbon shaft.

Will - I think the prop was sold from Bob's car.

Roger - Yep, AAS are doing the work. I've ordered the bearing repair kit from Monkfish.

How much does a bearing replacement cost? Any excuse to upgrade...

I've got no experience with driveshafts, just that link seemed to vindicate CF over Al for a 1-piece. Are Monkfish supplying CF driveshafts now? I think Emma was providing punishment for one.

The bearing repair kit is £70 from MF.

Yeah, the link does seem to suggest the carbon propshaft removes a lot of the issues of the Al 1-piece (the fact it doesn't stipulate a max top speed of 155mph for the carbon prop is a good sign!).

Emma was testing an upgraded one, but don't think it was carbon.

Yep I have the carbon one. You can get a 10% discount on them if you're a member of the ls1gto forum too.

Emma was testing a thicker diameter half shaft to stop the axle tramp. No idea if it was CF or not, but isn't related to this smile

have changed mine. did not find it difficult. got the bearing kit from the fish. just remember to mark both sections before you take it apart so you can put it back together as before. props are usually balanced.

Did mine earlier in the year too, using a bearing from Monkfish. It was actually pretty straight forward and there are some good video guides on You Tube which I followed.
