Hey all,

I've not owned my CV8 Monaro for long but have noticed when driving and NOT braking, there is a metallic scraping sound which I am sure is coming from the brakes, I have also noticed that the discs are worn in what seems to me to be a strange way, in that the wear is not to the outer edge of the disc:

Does anyone know if this is normal?

Thanks!smile

Wear isn't often to the outer edge of the disc, and as they get more and more worn, a 'lip' on the edge of the disk will form.
If the pads are shot, it could be the caliper scratching the disc?

The pads seems to have a lot of wear left so I don't think that is an issue (I meant to include that in my post).

There is definitely a lot of lip though, which does seem unusual to me?

My old CV8 did something similar. It had a scraping noise from the rear when driving and went away when I braked. I ended up changing the pads and disks, think the inside pads were worn. Might also add that one of my rear wheels also got warm as the heat transferred through from the disk.

That's a good shout, I'll check the wheels after driving home this evening, thanks!

They look like Richieslow's old brake discs. I think he changed them for vxr ones.

I recently changed my rear discs and pads when they started to get noisy. The inner pads were a lot more worn than the outer ones for some reason.

Never had noise issues before, or since the change, so definitively worth checking your brakes over properly.

Yep, they were so bad that nobody wanted me following them eek

I changed them for VXR brakes with braided hoses (by Monkfish) and there was a marked improvement in pedal feel and braking capability. I did still suffer from the scraping noise from the rear brakes if the car had been sat idle for too long. Also, the material transfer and subsequent juddering could still occur after long periods of only light braking.

If I was in that position again I would just go straight to the AP's or similar as the six pot callipers are in a totally different league to the old fashioned sliding callipers that came as standard.

I bought a second car recently, so my 2005 CV8 has become more of a garage queen of late. Downside of that is it can sit for longer between uses. I try not to let it sit for more than a couple of weeks between uses but it recently sat for 4 weeks straight and when I first drove it the "metallic scraping" noise you describe sounded so bad I thought that something had fallen off and was dragging along the tarmac. However, a quick "Italian tune-up" with some hard braking and the noise went away. Mind you, my discs (slotted DBAs the same 320mm size as the originals) are on their last legs and need changed soon. Try taking it for a blast on a country road and see if that cures it.

I'm sure AP's are great (for the price they should be) but I recall someone saying that they don't react well to periods of non-use, which for me would make them a no-no.
