if the worst comes to the worst and its an engine replacement you might want to look at other options than a like for like swap, for just a few hundred pounds more for the engine you could have an extra 50hp at the flywheel http://www.partsworldperformance.com/ls3-376-480-v...

Cheers moif, yeah ive resided myself to the fact that it'll probably need a new engine, and if it does then im liking the sound of that 480 bhp block!

Always a bugger when things go wrong, but silver lining and all that. Unless it won't pass emissions why not skip the 480 & go for the 525?

If you've resigned yourself to that, maybe you need to chat with Moif about options. He may know of one that you haven't thought of. wink

The cam specs don't look the most Mot-friendly. Couple that with slightly disappointing power for the cam spec, I'd rather choose a cam from the U.S. And stick it in a standard LS3.

Which was why I suggested the 480 version rather than the 525, there are loads of options out there including as mikey suggests buying a different cam yourself and having it fitted - that will cost more, probably a lot more by the time you start getting into getting the right valve train components etc and get it installed. I figured for a couple of hundred quid more if you can buy one off the shelf that was a safer bet if your trying to cut costs. If money is no object then yeah you start getting into LS7/LS9/LSA or for the hell of it a custom built LSX but you double the price and add some more :-)

If i did opt for the 480 bhp engine for example, is it literally a matter of one out, one in? Looks like there could be an electronics pack to change? As i said, im looking to get the car taken to AAS in the next few days as they are literally just up the road, and since its my everyday driver i need it back asap.

Then you may be better to go for what we did, which was to source a crate like for like LS3 and have it installed.

The chronology for ours was

Blown and delivered to Monkfish on the Saturday, primary inspection when they got a moment on Tuesday (valve/piston contact on two cylinders diagnosed bending valve stems. Engine ordered and paid for Wednesday, and delivered Thursday afternoon. By the following Monday, the engine was fitted and running, and after asking permission, Roger used the car until the Friday when I collected it (earliest I could get there) just to make sure everything was fine.

I used Roadcraft at Lancing for a next day delivery http://www.roadcraftuk.co.uk/ but they won't take card payments if it's being delivered to an address other than the card holder, so I had to transfer the money. Next day delivery was £60 IIRC.

Everything you do to change the car from how it was may be tempting, but will add time to when you can expect it back. If you rebuild your engine, then you will be waiting on parts - often an insignificant part can hold up a build for a week. If you work on £2.5k for an engine build (including labour) compared to a new engine and selling the wrecked engine for £1.5k, then a lot of your costs are mitigated.

If I was doing the same now, then I would probably do the same as Moif, but expect the car to be away for a further month.

If you do go down the new engine route, make sure that whoever does it stanps a recorded number on the engine, and have that changed with DVLA. I sent in a copy of the engine receipt, and the Monkfish instalation receipt, which showed the number that they had given the engine, and the log book was returned with the new number.

Cheers for that lengthy reply Araf - lots of food for thought there. Probably will go with a standard LS3 to be honest, then get another cam fitted at a later date, as i will miss it's lopey idle! smile

If your current engine is cam'd, maybe you can re-use that, orinstall another with the same spec before fitting the engine?

If you put a standard engine in, then you will have to re-tune, if the spec differs from what you currently have.

More than happy to help in any way we can, so if you think of anything else, let me know. smile
