I always do 2 a year.

Assuming for a Monaro...

Anything from a 5W30 to a 10W40 can be used - I'm using Mobil 0W40. You could probably also try a 5W50 if you really wanted (if you do a lot of track work and hammer the car then this is what could be used).

Look for ACEA A3/B4 as a minimum, GM LL-A-025 preferably if not dexos 2 (dexos 2 is the newest GM spec and is backwardly compatible with LL-A-025).

Avoid cheap rubbish oil, there are certain brands I can and cannot recommend, PM for info.

I need to get out more....

As Vince says a quality oil is best but if it has the specs he has said then it should be good, I do and always have done with all my cars 5000 miles oil and filter changes. I also use 10w/40 it is good for this climate as goes all through the year, but 5w/30 is just as good really. HTH

If you're using decent oil, and not abusing the life out of it, 10k is quite fine for a service interval.

They arent particularly stressed engines.

A lot of it is just peoples own preferences some like Castrol and others like Valvoline or Mobil but all are good with the specs given.

There was from memory a very long test done on oils and mileage I think they did it on New York taxis , the concusion was it is some times pointless changing oil in between services as the oil was not out of its use able life and was not that dirty/ full of particles , if you use a good oil 7500 miles I would say is fine and going to 10 k is ok , if you track it a lot then that distance can be reduced , forced induction need more regular changes as you get more blow by gasses but if you had forced induction and never drove it hard then it would probably be fine on the na change schedule , the Aussi change schedule is 7500 miles from memory but they also say you can do intermediate changes if used heavily between changes , I go to MF once a year for each car , Maloo does not get to 10 k between services , Monaro is just about 10 k on each service and oil in Monaro still looks ok , I prefer the thicket oil 10/ ? as you burn in theory less of a thicker oil , Monaros and vxr8 have a lot of oil so in theory takes longer to get dirty , I'm sure others have different inputs but that's what I'm sticking with lol , I even bought a Monaro filter for an interim but have never used it

It's to do with the base oils used - API Groups I and II generally cheaper to buy than (usually) better performing Groups III and IV. Plus it depends on what deal the blender/marketer has struck with their respective suppliers.

Don't forget to also buy a decent filter, as this IS just as important as decent oil.

I used to have a job that involved millions of barrels of crude, but that was a different life.
