I've been asked to provide the insurance company (Onecall) with my NI number so they can do a licence check (this is a first so I'm wondering why?) but I'm not keen on letting them have this (the NINO that is), nothing to hide as such but I don't fancy them having this extra personal data. I did the quote thru gocompare 2 weeks ago and if I'd known beforehand about all this malarkey would have gone elsewhere (when renewing over the phone they even asked if the car was in a police compound!).

Has anyone else on here had to go through this nonsense?

This is so they can check your licence with the DVLA to see about any points etc. I had the same when hiring a van on Saturday

But that comes from your driving licence number, not your National Insurance number.

I'd love an insurance company to come on here and explain why the NI number is necessary.

Mine wanted a DVLA access code. You get it from DVLA web site. That code can then be used to access your details with DVLA by an outsider like insurance or an employer.

To get the code, you do have to enter your NI number, but why don't they just ask you to get a code? Seems like they want to apply for it themselves. Which is very strange. I'd just ask if they'd accept the code.

You get it here and it's free -

That's what I was thinking.

They obviously don't trust anyone, we've already disclosed points but they also check to see if you've got expunged points (notice how to can ask for points to be removed after 4 years but the insurance companies say, ...in the last 5 years". It's just so they can fleece you for a few more quid.

Interesting bit at the bottom of that link

"It’s a criminal offence to obtain someone else’s personal information without their permission."

so the insurance company can do one IMO. No doubt where you sign gives them the necessary permission.

Didn't see that bit! Interesting!

Well, if they can't or won't tell you why they want your NI, I'd offer them the code or they can get stuffed.

As stated - all they need is the code. Takes seconds to generate, but don't be tempted to test it : works only once!

Son is learning to drive, so - since he can't drive either of our cars - I've had him out in a dual control hire car umpteen times. It's a pretty good process imho.

Very simple to get a code. It lasts only for a certain while but easy to get another on line. Used it for a few dealer road tests recently and a track day. Do not give out a national insurance number that can be used to clone a persons identity.

Hi guys, I think the reason for your NI number is to further collect data about you for the coming New World Order, this as already started in the USA and its going to the rest of the world slowly but surely.

Want confirmation, check out INFO WARS.com.

Ade,

If you read into that stuff it will drive you crazy!.
However, I really think that there is something to it, just look at the potential for WW3 in the Middle East . That is the great plan of the new world order.....
Mad Max 1 might be just around the corner after all!
Don't have too many sleepless nights.......

It pays to keep up to speed on these issues, as I see it forewarned is forearmed.
