What does the handbook recommend? for the 328hp CV8 it states the engine is mapped for 91 & 95 RON, so as mine is as it left the factory, I just use Shell 95.
I'd doubt anywhere in UK, Aus or even Europe sells 91 RON petrol ? 95 is lowest that I've ever seen, although never been to Aus.stevieturbo said:

Not in the UK, but definitely in Aus, where the calibration would have been developed. Point I was making though was that it isn't mapped for 98 as standard, so there is no significant benefit to running on it. However, anything modified and particularly anything with a charger will want the highest rated possible.bigkeeko said:
Not trying to stir a hornets nest here but in my LS engined Camaro and any other V8 I`ve had the higher octane stuff didn`t appear to make any difference to performance even though I used it whenever I could.
The ECU can pull a lot of spark if it senses (or predicts) knock, but AFAIK it's only really FI LS builds where you start getting knock limited. I'm running increased compression and an aftermarket cam, and I don't think I've seen any real knock (running Shell v-power/nitro admittedly). It wouldn't surprise me if a standard engine saw little benefit in premium fuel, except for the additives. It's up to you, but be aware that you're paying extra for the additives, the higher octane number does not give you a bigger 'bang'.
Higher octane is just a greater resistance to knock. The car is unlikely to be knocking on the factory tune, and it isn't mapped to advance the spark to take advantage of the greater knock resistance of 98RON. So you will not see a performance improvement because it's 98RON or 99RON or what have you, unless it is mapped to take advantage of it (or something else is wrong enough to make it knock or predict knock a lot on the factory tune which 98RON somehow fixes)
So yes, by all means buy the V-Power Nitro+ Super Ultimate Turbo, as it's only a few % more than the cheap stuff, but be aware what you're buying
As you've no doubt inferred, I generally stick in some Tesco 95, or whatever else is nearby when I'm getting empty

I'm not sure if there's even an advantage to be had were the spark further advanced over the stock tune - IIRC it goes to something like 40 degrees already, and that's potentially negative work (i.e. explosion working to push the piston backwards)! Modern heads don't need as much advance I'm told.Higher octane is just a greater resistance to knock.
