In which case your low temperature ECT tables are probably not dialled in correctly. Your tune needs more work.

(All IMHO of course)

Cheers - I'll keep that in mind when it's being tweaked again, even though I have no idea what that means laugh

Gareth,

Just want a quick turn around due to work commitments and a firm cost completely understand a rebuild could work out cheaper but with time constraints and the un known cost I feel a crate engine fits the bill better.

Was all convinced to go the 376-525 with a nice lumpy idle until speaking with monkfish and they said the cams ste and mapping it would be a lot more than there magic cam if I fitted but then I have the cost of the cam and springs on top of fitting the lump.

Cars are nothing but headache Diff Last month and engine this month whats the betting gear box next?
Jason, Just hope you get it sorted whatever way suits TBH Mate, but I've wasted a few bob on these cars in the past and didn't want you doing it too?

This is why I rely on this forum, so many guys ready to offer there help and knowledge genuinely wouldn't be able to own a car like this without this resource.

What's your thoughts on the parts world 376-525? Obviously building one yourself is cheaper but I don't have the skillset or the time as any more than a week or so I need to buy a replacement car

Thanks again

If your short of time then the standard GM crate is still good value there are better cams out there than the 480 and 525 as they have been around years and a lot has been learn't in that time.

^^^WHS. More so when the engine is cold, mine is a mild cam and is more difficult to drive - still great though
They still drive ok in traffic but you wont have the comfort of letting the clutch up in 1st gear and the car smoothly moves along at walking pace at 800rpm a cammed engine will surge a bit and will not smoothly roll along

I agree with Gareth- a crate engine seems an expensive route to go down. But it is understandable why you want to go down this route if you need your car on the road asap.

Do cammed crate engines come with tunes? In any case, I would avoid cammed crate engines. If you're going down the crate route, get a standard engine. In the future, if you want to stick a cam in, you can do it at your leisure and when it suits you best. There's plenty of choice out there in respect of cams. It's just a case of doing research- all the info is out there. Plus there's some knowledgable people on here (and facebook). I have a cam in mine and chose it based on research (and help from Richard Ingram and Gareth MYM8V8) and it seems to work ok smile Cam specs can be found on my thread: http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=138...

Regarding driveability mine bucks a little at idle. I'm confident this is mostly down to the tune, which I will sort at some point!

Sorry to Hi jack this thread... but Snowwolf you have hit the nail on the head regarding an issue with my car. Tonight when starting up and driving off from cold my car bucks like a bronco at slow speed. It does surge and will not roll away smoothly. It must be something to do the low temperatures as it's not too bad in the summer.
How the hell do you fix it?
Almost forgot the car has a stock cam(05 Monaro)

The answer is; who has successfully installed and tuned one of these (376/525) motors and can give you a cast iron recommendation? Personally I would leave it alone unless it was going into a weekend warrior. Daily Driver? definitely not without having a proven tune for one.

Again, I would be pulling the existing motor apart and having a look at it first if its got to come out anyway. (It would be very quick to drain the oil and have a look at what's in it). If its too bad (which I doubt unless you have a failed part such as a lifter) you can get a stock LS3 off the shelf quickly anyway.

Cam it later with something that is proven to work, but get back to work first. My 2P.

Sounds like you have another problem if you have a standard cam, a cammed engine does not tick over smoothly so that can make the car surge a bit in traffic if clutch up in first on tickover.
Yours might be sensor related making fuel/air mixture wrong maybe O2 sensors if they have not been changed before.

That's exactly what I've just had done with mine - the stock crate motor is sweet as a nut, might even keep it stock anyway - still has headers and hi flo cats etc.

Gents

Thank you all for the advise. The engine is being pulled Tuesday by Andy and shipped to boosted ls1 he is going to see if it can be saved at a reasonable budget and timeframe.

Will update once I know more.

Bit of a long haul when you've got Craig at Dyno-torque just around the corner from you and Andy?
