Hello all,

I've got an LS1/T56 from a 2000 Camaro in my Cobra replica,

I've had a grumbling 5th & 6th gear for ages (not speed dependant) so am guessing the 5/6 cluster is probably loose on its shaft, I' m splitting the engine/box to drop in a new clutch so now seems like a good time to get the box sorted.

Any recommendations for a repair and are there any obvious upgrades that I should get done at the same time? (I might be about to stick a blower on it as well :-))

Thanks

Jim

I think you can beef up the selector forks. Somebody will be along to confirm if this is correct.

There are threads on LS1Tech about the loose 5/6, but it sounds like fairly involved work building up the shaft again. Not sure how cost viable this sort of thing will be here in the UK as it's a specialised machining process.

It'd really be worth getting it apart first, before deciding what the best options would be. Most basic refresh parts are fairly readily available, but shafts and other bits arent so readily available. So be sure of what you need first, just in case lack of parts availability screws things up.

As for upgrades...basics are billet shift keys, bronze fork pads ( although some argue original plastic is better ) and yes you can get a steel 3-4 fork.

None of those things will affect or change the amount of power the box will handle, which is plenty anyway and your car looks as if it will be very light, so cant see you giving it too much trouble.

Thanks guys, read a few threads on LS1 tech and got pointed towards "the gearbox man" who happen to be just up the M1!!

Sounds like they've done a number of these before so will drop mine off once it's out in a week or so - 3-4 week lead time which is fine for me.

He's been around for a very long time, although havent really heard of many who've used them which almost seems odd.

No news is probably a good thing, as bad reports always spread quickly.

Bernie the gearbox man is very good, Ive used him for T5 boxes 12 years ago.

I rebuilt my T56 myself, had the rumbling in 5th/6th.

I bought a new output shaft and 5th/6th cluster gear, at the same time I opted for the stage 2 rebuild kit. Everything bought from these guys, shipping was reasonable and quick.

The kit definitely made the gearbox less agricultural, never missed 3rd gear on a quick change since the rebuild.

Plenty of "how to's" on the net of how to rebuild the T56 along with the Borg Warner manual.

Rich.

I had a T56 done by gearboxman. Pricing was good and they were very honest about what was needed (i.e. Almost nothing). Did take some time to get it sorted, so if you were in a hurry it might have become inconvenient.

I'd have no issues using them again thumbup

Dropped the box off with Bernie and agreed that as I was going on holiday and then he was closing for XMAS/New Year that "early Jan" would do for me.

Got a call today to say the box is ready for collection (new 5/6 cluster as suspected).

Happy Days
