Manual LS2 VXR8

Starting a few upgrades soon with headers & cats but later will be doing re-map & CAI but am thinking about a cam at the same point. Opinions are divided it seems on whether a wild cam is suitable for daily driving or not. I'm not chasing massive bhp figures but would rather decent driveability - is this still achievable with a wild cam?

If you want some comparison, you can pop over and try the Ute - its an LS3 but running the mild cam if you want?

I can also talk to you about the MF one in the R8 as well if you like.

What are you calling wild? Do you want to pass an MOT?

I was after a mild cam and was talked into just shy of the biggest that will pass an MOT...which isn't silly-big in real terms. Compared to what's available 222-226 is really mild.

Walkinshaw mild or wild cams (sorry don't know the profiles). Both would definitely pass the MOT. I understand the wild is quite lopey but as my normal commute spends a fair bit of time either sat in traffic or 1st/2nd gear I'd rather keep the smooth ride & go mild over rocking about with a wild cam.

If it's passing MOT...then it definitely isnt very wild...but then wild may mean different things to different people.

I think so. Flying back from Stockholm late Friday so as long as flights aren't delayed then any time Sat is fine

What sort of time were you thinking of?

11ish? Gives us both time for a lazy breakfast especially if you're later getting back unless another time suits you better (I'm free all day).

I have the WPUK Wild CAM in mine, LS3, if yours is a daily driver as you say and you spend most time in 1st and 2nd, I wouldnt recommend it.

Saying that, Tim might be able to dial it back to make it smoother but you would have to ask if that's possible?

Mine in traffic or when cold can be very jumpy.

I would say that for most people, the answer is probably no. But for me the answer was hell yes! You should definitely try someone else's first if possible and see what you think.

I loved the Walkinshaw wild cam in mine, and I used it as a daily driver. But you have to learn how to drive the car differently, some use of the clutch to drag the engine to settle when approaching traffic lights required at times, more revs that you'd normally use to set off smoothly etc.

It's not to everyone's tastes, but I loved it. The lumpy tick over and shaking from side to side is something special cloud9

Goes like stink tho smile

Mine rocked from side to side quite nicely, and almost with some sort of un-even pattern too. This was especially noticeably in the exhaust note. Just loverly. cloud9

And it also went like stink too wink

Iv'e got the Monkfish 2 cam (their lumpy/Lairy one) and it rocks from side to side on tick over, you do have to learn to drive it again when you first have it fitted as you have to use more revs than before to pull away smoothly. Mine sounds lovely and goes like stink right round to 7000rpm. I use mine as a daily driver and I love it and think a mild cam would be almost a waste of money as it wouldn't make it a completely different car. But that's just my opinion

Most issues are with the tune not the cam. Ive seen some mild cams with poor off idle characteristics.
Exactly the place thats hardest to get nice.

Dont blame the cam for that though, its the tune that needs to change to suit. Most times this is not done optimally.
The tune is supposed to tie everything together.

I can vouch for this as it had a very nice off beat sound.

I run a cam on an LS1 it's not that wild and iam putting out 503hp and 419rwhp. I have said my cam is not wild but it does shunt a lot in traffic and can be a pain driving in town.

As Richard says, there is a 99.5% chance it is simply down to tuning.
