Hi All,

I'm out in the sticks and the low oil volume warning has come on. The car currently has castrol edge 5w-30 and the only oil I can find locally is castrol edge 5w-40. Is it ok to mix the two?

The engine is a 2008 2.0TDI PD non DPF.

Thanks

DP

Can't imagine it would make much difference and definitely better than running with insufficient oil, I wouldn't worry about it.

scratchchin If you mix it 50/50, presumably you would get 5w-35?

People say don't mix different grades of oil, but I can't see it hurting.

Take it to a garage and have them do an oil change.

As long as the oil meets the VW specs I am sure it will be fine.

As above, check the specs - the numbers refer to the weight of the oil and you don't want to run the wrong stuff ideally (though on an 8yr old engine it may not be the first time). A small amount is unlikely to be an issue.

Then get down to Halfords or online to Opie and buy some proper stuff!

As an emergency measure yes 5w40 is ok.
