I have just picked up my 2013 E63 and wondering a little on the Eco and start/stop function. When does the start/stop klick in and change from inactive to active? I drove about 45 miles and an hour before it became active.

I have also heard, that to save fuel, when Eco is active, the switches off 4 cylinders to help save fuel in certain driving modes such as a consistent speed on the motorway?

Basically when it wants to. It has to meet so many specific conditions which are listed in the manual, such as temperature, battery condition etc. that it seldom bothers, unless you don't require it.

Not as far as I'm aware, it's just for stop/start and, when in C mode, eliminating first gear starts and holding onto gears too long.

Mine just gets left in S mode once up to temp, a lot easier to deal with.

I am picking my 16-plate 63 Wagon up tomorrow so that is useful info

My 2015 Dodge Ram pickup has a 400bhp hemi in and that does have cylinder shutdown - with that feature and the 8-speed auto i get 25mpg at 70 on the motorway which is remarkabke given its size weight and performance

My Jeep SRT-8 also has a Hemi in it, though no shutdown feature and a 5 speed box. It's averaged 15.3mpg over the last couple of thousand miles. frown

Agree.

However, on the 63 it is switchable and even then only works in C mode which, in my case, is only used for getting the oils up to temp. smile

I have a 2013 E63 - and quickly learned to turn off Eco mode after it became confused and stalled the car pulling out of a junction! I have heard of various E class owners having similar issues in heavy traffic that keeps stopping.
I was told by the MB dealer that it does also deactivate cylinders when cruising - although for whatever reason I have always doubted this. You will find it makes little to no difference in economy anyway so I would turn it off!

The other thing I have found is the first minute or so in cold weather the gearbox is very very jerky - be warned it can be embarrassing if you kangaroo down the road when first setting off. Again I have heard this is a common issue - solved by letting the car warm up a bit before driving off.

Other than the above they are great cars - for such a tank I can't believe how well it handles!

Cheers, had to check the picture then smile

They got shouted at for leaving paw marks on a few cars apparently (not by me I should add, I didn't even see that being taken).
