My Uncle flew out of Crail when he was in the fleet air arm in the second world war. He also crashed a Barracuda I think on the grass beside the current strip when his hydraulics failed. He returned a few years ago to see what the place was like and said the markings for practise aircraft carrier landings were still visible. Historic Scotland does not allow any upgrades to the site, so the surface is as it was all these years ago.
It is reckoned that the site (former pig farm) will get sold for housing in the foreseeable future, so use it while you can. The man behind Crail died in an unfortunate accident 2 years ago and it is run by his sister now.

Sounds a bit like York where rear drive cars struggle even on drag radials. I don't much enjoy driving a high stall converter, it's very all or nothing. Fine for the strip, joyless on the road.
I've never raced at York, but looking at pictures etc of the surface there, it looks a lot better than Crail.

Crail, just like airfields here is just literally like normal asphalt/tarmac you would find on any 20+ year old road. And Despite Crail seeing regular use it doesnt really have a coating of rubber down like some venues might get at the start area.
In that case I would suggest the OP visit the Pod for a RWYB before spending anything more at the moment. That will give him a true reflection of what he needs to do. Big ask but maybe a nice weekend out for him, maybe meet up with someone of a like mind on the way?

I'd like to see a list of mods (or the current spec) of the engine.

Respect beer

High stall converters just feel like a slipping gearbox to me. At low speeds, I can happily ride around in any old gear as the connection between box engine is just slush.

Sadly. I think all old runways will go in the next few decades. No enough money in the pastime to mandate keeping them in use.

York is just old concrete sections with grass growing in the joints. The main strip has been patched a few times. The run-off is utterly shocking: Gravel and huge potholes. I reckon if you listen carefully, you'll hear the old Wellingtons circling ears

I do plan a trip to a good track to see what my real times would be. My engine is a completely standard 98 Camaro (around 90k miles), no cats, egr removed,no power steering or air con, stainless twin 2.5 inch system with magnaflow straight through silencers, intake has twin filters on a y piece from Maf. PCM is stock too. Engine runs really quiet and smooth and changes up at just over 6k at full throttle.

The thing is....if he wants to improve performance where he races.....going to the Pod where it is easy wont do that.

He needs to do what he needs to do for where he uses his car, which is local to him etc.

No sense fixing a car to race hundreds of miles away, that you might only get to once a year or two, but it still suffers badly at your local track you may get to multiple times a year.

You'll be quite lightweight too, so I think you will attain your goal of 11's at the pod. Good luck!

Modern stuff is getting quicker too - these chipped and tuned Audi S3's, golf r's, merc amg's, ariel atoms, bmw m5's I can just beat head to head, but audi s6's and nissan gtr's have just too much power.

The key with them all...traction !

Although I'd be very surprised if an M5 is even getting into the 12's at Crail unless it is using very sticky tyres ?

Most modern turbo 4wd stuff these days should be fairly easy to do low 12's, or with a bit more work into the 11's

Obviously they can go harder too, but even hitting 11's for them doesnt take miracles these days
