I've found the weirdness in my throttle cable - there must be some sort of clutch mechanism in the cruise module, as you can see it slip past about 2/3 travel of the throttle pedal. The top disc is from the pedal, the bottom is to the throttle body, and the middle from the traction(?) module.

Does the TC system also use this at all? I'm tempted to bypass it.

traction does back off the throttle too

Feared as much...hmm. I don't really fancy pulling this thing apart unless I'm confident it's going to work, but sounds like bypassing it will also have consequences (other than no cruise).

Looks like you can get them for about £100 from Oz, so not too horrendous...but doesn't look immediately obvious, and not sure what I'd be looking to do once in there!

Can a tech II be used to disable the TC module? I'm assuming if I bypass the cruise, the computer will get upset when it tries to reduce throttle and fails, but I'm trying to confirm if this is the case with further research.

e: I know there's a little widget you can buy to automatically disable TC each time you turn the car on...might be the path of least resistance, but a tidy solution would be best.

Does it actually use the throttle for the Traction Control though?

Doesn't it just use spark/timing as part of a 'torque reduction' strategy, and the ABS system?

I have had a quick look in the service manual and as far as diagnosing traction control issues there's no mention of throttle whatsoever and (tellingly perhaps) there are no ABS/TC DTCs related to the throttle that I can see.

I will stress the 'that I can see' bit though, as I've only spent a little bit of time looking in there and it's not always organised in a friendly way hehe

When I looked into this the throttle/cruise/TC systems are all interlinked. No one could be sure how much info each system feeds to each other. I decided to get the TC delete wiring harness so it always turns off when I start the car.

What's the worst case scenario if I just bypass the TC/cruise then? Fault codes that can only be cleared with a tech II?

I get the impression the 04 system is much more basic than the 05/06 system, so I'm cautiously optimistic. Some people seem to say just unplugging it is enough to bypass it.

Here are various quotes I've saved (googleable I would have thought):

and I got rid of that anoying ABS fault and traction control fault. It's so easy you won't believe it. In the harness going to the gauge cluster is a green wire and yellow/red wire. These are the signal wires for the ABS and traction control. Just eliminate those two wires and the fault goes away. On startup the the DIC does it's systems check and before I eliminated those two wires I would get ABS Fault and Low traction/traction control not working, now those faults are gone.

i found this out by mistake.if you pull the fuse out it will turn off as soon as the car move's. by that i mean when you start it it will be on but as soon as you start to go it will go off and stay off.

i think he means traction control not torque mgt. disconnect the plug that goes into the Bosch unit. just follow the cable back from the throttle body and it's that thing right in front of the fire wall on the passenger side. it will go to TC off all of the time with no other thing being affected. i ran like that for months before i got my inverter which BTW works great

Well I guess I'm partially..
correct about the car not starting without ABS. It seems that the 04 is different from the 05 & 06. I just got through talking to a friend that is putting an 05 GTO interior into a 69 Chevelle. He has the factory service manual for the 05 and I have the factory service manual for the 04 and we compared the cluster connector wiring of the two and the 05 & 06 do not have the green wire and the yellow/red wire for the ABS and Traction Control. So it appears that the signals for those items must be sent via UART serial data through the BCM. I know I have no problems starting the car and he says his won't start without the ECBM connected. KINGSIZE I appologize, your are correct about the car not starting without the ECBM on the 05 & 06 and I'm correct about it starting on the 04.
