Morning all,

I'm a bit of a serial car seller / buyer, no denying that.

Having just sold my e60 (£8k) to be replaced with a Mx5 (£2k) I was outside washing and tidying my new purchase. As is the way my neighbour's will often come out for a chat but his opening line this time was "business not doing well?!" And referencing the "downgrade".

Do people really judge like that and care what people / neighbour's think?
(Is start a poll thread but I don't know how!)

I'm sure people do think like that on both sides.

Can't say I've ever once purchased a car and for a second thought "What would the neighbours think" plus in these days of cheap leases and so many company cars half the time they're not judging your taste they're judging how much of your salary you've set aside for the monthly payment or how generous your employers company car scheme is.

In the UK, the neighbour on my left alr art knows I buy cars I like and not because of age, prestige etc.
The neighbour on the right is a dick and I couldn't give a flying fk what he might think.

In two villages in Germany and one in Switzerland where I've lived, apart from the odd, "guy a German car", I can say they all seem to love the sound ofTVR's smile

I replaced a lovely B7 RS4 with a £3k E39 530i Touring (albeit a smart one) and my neighbours didn't bat an eyelid. Yours sounds a bit rude.

Most of my neighbours drive fairly new, economical and boring cars.
I'm zooming about in a 2005 Subaru Legacy and a 2005 BMW 645, the 645 replaced a 3 year old X6.

No, I'm not concerned about their thoughts on my car choices.

I went from an oldish 306D estate to a year old 330D Touring & a motorhome then two Fiat Coupe 20VT's in succession then a Mk5 Golf GTi to my 996 & Clio.

One snooty neighbour accused me of not paying ny taxes (still want to know how she found out lol) rofl

They drive a 207 Estate & a Kia - my cars must seem very flash to them!

When I first parked my Citroen C4 Cactus on the drive, my neighbour wandered over and said "the bloody rubbish they give out as courtesy cars these days is scandalous." hehe

No, I don't care what the neighbour think. Your neighbour sounds like a dick/keeping up with the Jones' type. Why not say you had a free up a bit of capital for a speedboat purchase or similar?

To be fair a 2 grand mx5 proabably does look like a shed. So in that context the neighbours comment seems reasonable,

The only had two negative comments.

Oh you've changed your job (swanky company Audi replaced by pcp cheapo Peugeot)

And the other.

I've often been seen out fettling with old british sports cars, but this time my 94 Merc SL. The 1st year of ownership a lot of time was spent catching up on 10yrs of neglect.

Ensuing Conversation with non car owning neighbour, whilst out checking fluids etc.

Her, broken down again?
Me, no just some fiddling about.
Her, but you never drive it, all you do is fix it.
Me, I do around 6k miles a year, mostly high days and holidays, we're just back from France.
Her, WHAT!...FRANCE!....IN THAT!

I don't really mind though, it's the only time I have a conversation with most of them.

Not in relation to cars, no. But I get on pretty well with my immediate neighbours.

The weird neighbours thread shows that a notable proportion of people, including PHers are fking weird and take too much of an interest in what their neighbours do.

Its more of a reflection of your neighbour and the general population. Its why car leasing is rife. Unintelligent/poor people place too much emphasis on the car.

Nearest neighbour is a farmer who is a Land Rover maniac. He frequently rolls up with a sodding big trailer after an agricultural sale with some rusty thing on the back, which we all coo over for several hours.

Other neighbours know that my shedding is a lifestyle choice, not an economic necessity.

If I lived in the sort of place where neighbours did this, I would get the ropiest Land Rover forward control I could find and dump it in the front drive.
