Went to look at a car today, talking to the salesman abouthe part-exing mine. Offered me a decent price, about to go out for a test drive and the phone rings. Boss man doesn't want my car as part exchange.

It's a '59 plate, full main dealer service history, 12 month MOT, never had an advisory, good cosmetic condition, new front tyres, brakes and battery. So not something they would have to put a lot of money in to, at least. But no, wouldn't have it.

Is this a normal thing? I was a bit gutted really.

Quite normal in my experience, but the dealer has usually rung somewhere suitable and offered me a p/x. Never been turned away.

I guess knowing the make and model of car may have a bearing.

Up to them whether they take your car or not. Go elsewhere or if you really want their car, sell yours privately or WBAC it.

They possibly have had issues shifting similar models in the past?

Actually, it is a Dealer ploy to eventually low ball you on your trade-in...

That's the only thing I could think of.

Oh well, guess it is normal. Never done a PX before you see. Thanks.

Yes, a dealer offered me £2k than WBAC for my car and said there's so many about we struggle to sell.

So I sold it to WBAC instead

Slightly off topic :-

I went into Lancaster Mazda yesterday with my 7 year old boy to see the new MX-5 hardtop. I took his picture standing by the car. Nobody came to talk to me about the new car.

I was half way out of the exit & a salesman rushed over & demanded to see the photo's I'd taken telling me it's against company policy to take photo's of cars in the showroom. I was miffed but showed him my photo's & hopefully proved that I wasn't a spy from Toyota.

Then I went into their Honda showroom next door to see the new Civic & there was a cardboard cut-out of Button & Alonso. My boy being a huge F1 fan wanted his photo taken by this cardboard cutout. No, they wouldn't allow it. Company policy.

Has the corporate world gone mad!

Remaining off topic, that MX-5 is gorgeous.

As a car salesman, I have to say that's fking stupid. What a bunch of idiots, sorry your son wasn't allowed to take pictures, stuff like this puts people off dealers!

To the OP, sometimes we don't want cars, surprised they didn't even make you a (low) offer though!

That would have resulted in me taking loads of photos and videos all over the shop.
WTF are they thinking?

Sounds like the salesman has possibly been a bit over enthusiastic with your px price (especially if you thought it was decent) and been brought back down to earth by his manager!

Wish I was near Lancaster. Would love to be part of a flash, flash-mob.

stupid salesstaff are stupid,

would have been a great opportunity to offer to take a pic of you and your boy together, engage you a bit about the car and build a relationship which might not benefit him today but certainly will down the line be it from yourself or just general positive feedback about your experience.

some people really shouldn't be in sales
