EDIT: The title should really be "HPI Records if a car is stolen and then found before insurance payout", apologies

Trying to keep it as brief as possible, what happens in the scenario that a car is stolen and then it is found (by tracker or otherwise) shortly afterwards the same day or the next day etc. and then returned back to me by police (or whoever returns it), when it comes to HPI records?

Will it get recorded as stolen and recorded?

Or does it only become SAR after insurance have paid out and then the car gets recovered later on as their property that they then keep and do whatever they usually do with them (auction or sell on or etc.)

I have the same conundrum.

My car was recovered undamaged about a mile away using tracker. Is the car now registered as stolen recovered and is this on the HPI, potentially devaluing the resale?
Should the insurance company now compensate the loss of value?

If the policy document gives that loss of value cover within the contract, then yes. If it doesn't, then no.

My car was stolen and recovered within 48hrs.

It doesn't show up as being Cat D or C etc because the insurance company didn't pay out for a total loss.

Our second car stolen the same night (12 years ago!) was recently part exchanged and the dealer that took it in observed that it had been stolen and recovered.
