Well yesterday car went for it mot and passed yeah but recommended a set of rear pads so I went and ordered a set throw work and sent them on and had them fitted. Then the phone call.

I was told by the garage your car has a misfire will check it out later for you then the phone goes again and it's a broken valve spring but valve seems to be OK. So new valves springs on there way.

My question is does anyone know where I can get the tool to do the springs in place?

Is the car standard ?

It does seem an unlikely story...more so that if a single spring had broken it would be almost a miracle if it didnt lead to further damage if you'd been driving it.

You could DIY make a tool, or just buy one from the US.

I never ever take my car to anything other than an MOT only location, just too many crooks out there looking for a fast easy buck. The misfire could be many things and I would get the ignition system looked at 1st, mine had one this week, swapped out for new Magnacor HT leads ad its seems fine again (car had originals on)

How did they diagnose a spring had gone, seems an odd place to look first off

The car is not standard and the mot garage place I use I trust with my car the 2 guys that work there are very respectful of my car. The misfire started when the car was in idle. The valve seems to sit back into place and line up with the others.

Fair play, hopefully not too difficult and no major harm done. Back in full working order soon I hope

I can lend you my Proform tool if you're in a bind, I have already broken and fixed it once though so it might require some mechanical sympathy. IIRC it came with a Chinesium 3/8" stud, and after it stripped I retapped it M10.

I guess that sums it up. hehe

Good luck with the repairs Si. Lucky you had a mechanic or two that were experienced enough to spot a problem quickly. cool

As mentioned on FB....I would be changing all springs after seeing that. That is not something that should ever happen, unless perhaps the cam is extreme for the springs, they have seen some severe usage, or there is an issue with the springs.
Either way...change them all !

Also, it would do no harm to get a borescope just to see if there is any visible evidence of the valve clipping the piston
These can be bought very cheap now off ebay etc if your mechanic doesnt have one.

Although if when closed all the valve stem heights are identical, then you could be fairly confident the valves are all good ( followed by compression or leakdown test after too )

That's the plan all valve springs are getting changed and the cam is not that extreme 223/231 comp cam and springs. I have also got sitting in waiting head gasket and valve so if need be I can just replace the valve if it has touched the piston.

Its not the duration with a cam that makes it extreme Si, its the lift and ramp rate. As on FB you need to check for coil bind and seating pressure. This should have been done when you originally installed the new cam and springs.

I have a cam that's nearly .7" of lift so the springs need changing like underwear..

Depends on the setup/heads etc.

Some insane builds are pushing near 1" of lift !!! Although doubt they'd be very road friendly lol

In the region of 0.620-650" is fairly normal now for a lot of sporty cams.

LS heads just flow so damn well and at higher lifts
