Hello

I recently bought An '04 Monaro VXR from elite cars (I've been having fun with it too). I had it up in the garage to get the brake pads changed and noticed that the rhs fuel tank strap has completely corroded.

Monkfish have informed me that this is an obsolete part, so my question is, does anyone know of where I could source the part, or do they know the details of said part so I can get one made?

Any help is appreciated.

Yeah I've tried ebay, nothing on there that I could find.

Don't I need specific dimensions to get one made?
I was thinking of getting some pvc coated heavy steel cable ties if I can't find one, and some rubber, obviously.

thicker and heavier duty with a rubber guard i would thought would work , i made mine up for my kitcar from scratch and they were fine , i'm assuming it's the same sort of style of straps as the kit car

Is it the same as the LHS strap? Could in theory support the tank and give someone the LHS strap to make a copy of? Just a thought, not seen under a 5.7 to know if they're symmetrical

from memory the straps are the same , it's just a case of making some thing up , a bit of stainless steal strip and a rubber strip of some type

I've found some 25mm galvanised steel banding online, going to cut to size with some heavy duty rubber to line it, should be fine I reckon.
I appreciate the feedback though, shame there don't seem to be any real ones available.

Wow my old car, had it for nearly 9 years. Is it your daily? Nice to see it's still being used properly! smile
Feel free to PM if you want to know any more about it.

This will be a far better idea than original equipment, Australian metal fitted to their cars are poor quality material.

I got some new ones when I got my car as they were pretty bad and thought I would get some before any problems I phoned Picador and they had them so got all 3 of them a genuine oil filter and all in inc postage was £140 I then took them over to rye metal finishers and got them to powder coat them

I recently made some for my gts. Used stainless.

The one on the offside needs to be quite substantial.

Zym, the car has no aircon belt, without looking at it further do you know why that is, or what further issues the aircon unit has? It also has a leaky steering rack I'm getting looked at soon, and clunks a lot at low speeds.
I'm guessing this is the slipped diff issue? I'm getting some oil from monkfish to see if it sorts it but do you know of any other issues?

Motomk, silly question, but I'm new to this and aware that my 2004 vxr has a lot of differences to the later ones, is that the specific strap to fit my car? I'm still leaning towards making my own atm.

If that is a picture of your car in the first post, it should fit as you have the older location for the fuel tank.
Being pedantic a VY Monaro doesn't exist as it would be a V2 series II or V2 series III in that era.
A VY commodore was the same vintage as a V2 series II/series III Monaro and they are similar cars.
The UK picked up V2 series III and VZ Monaro's.

Yeah from my research I came to the same conclusion. Thanks for the find, I'll see if they deliver to the UK. In the meantime I'm still going to make my own replacement as I've already bought the materials.

I'd prefer to PM you with info, but I don't seem to able to email you via PH.
But yes, the aircon compressor needed replacing or refurbishing, as its bearings made a hell of a racket when running.
The rear clunked to a lesser or greater extent throughout the time I had it "they all do that".

Looking into it a bit further, it is actually a large parts/engine place over the other side of town so if they won't deliver to the UK, let me know.

As mentioned, our metal might not be as good as we don't put salt on the roads over here and things tend not to rust as fast.
I suspect your home built parts might last longer!

I'm thinking that maybe, due to our weather, my galvanised steel bands might actually be a better fit than the original part!
I think I'll still grab an original though, just in case I mess it up.

The Aussie ebay page shared said they will ship the part to the uk, at a cost of $125 (for the postage alone).

Think I'll make my DIY solution for the time being, then drop some cash on this part later.
