So this might be a silly one but..

I know that VXR8s are loud, especially on start up etc, I know you can get valved exhaust systems

However coming from a 2.0t with drone at motorway speeds I'm interested to know how quietly you can drive these. May seem an odd question but my other half has tinnitus issues and a car that's noisy on long journeys becomes problematic

Thanks

Will depend somewhat on the exhaust system, but speaking from my Moanro with the Wortec system, it (was) very quiet at a cruise inside the car.

Cruising at 70 you're only doing about 1,750rpm and at very light throttle, so there isn't any drone. The VXR8s are a newer platform and likely even better in this regard.

I have a VE Commodore wagon but that's still on its factory exhaust at the moment, it's a quiet car at a cruise, although the road surface makes the biggest difference, on a freshly surfaced lane it's extremely quiet, on the more typical rough battered UK motorway surface it's naturally noisier.

My ve ute , with the bimodal switch , ie noisy or quiet , has the standard exhaust with a resonator removed from each bank , is either a straight through and no silencers , or a flick switch through two small silencers , is still the quietest car i drive , on the motorway you can hardly hear it with the exhaust flaps shut , open a very different story when making a bit of progress , it’s then the noisiest car i drive lol

Weird one this.
My first Monaro (6.0 VXR) had a Wortec exhaust fitted. In loud mode, it sounded like thunder when giving it some, but when cruising was very respectable and didn't drone. Very well judged in this mode. Oddly though, in quiet mode, it was nice and restrained outside, but droned quite badly on a cruise, annoying so.
Left it in loud mode!
The current 5.7 VXR has an AAS full system and TBH, it does drone somewhat. It isn't super loud outside like the Wortec was, but it isn't quiet either. The drone is acceptable, but I'd rather it wasn't there.

That's a fair point that I missed, I had the switchable Wortec as well, and quiet was indeed louder (or rather, boomier) in the car. I assumed this was to do with the rear boxes then being involved in silencing and as they sit within the rear bumper area it sort of ended up trapping more of the noise within ear shot, as opposed to firing it out the back hehe

Yeah something like that I'd imagine. On the Wortec it was only the back boxes that were bypassed to make it Nascar loud outside, but no drone in?

This is my AAS setup. I guess its the back box that is causing some drone. Thing is, they are rudely loud without!

My car has AAS headers and sports cats together with a Magaflow cat back system.
It is a bit noisy but not too bad at cruising speed ( 70mph )
I eventually took all the seats out and fitted some sound proofing from the back seat up to the front toe boards. You get black sticky tiles with silver foil on top which you can cut to shape.
When it was finished it looked like a Lunar module inside biglaugh
The good news is it was noticeably quieter at all speeds even if it was a pain to fit.
I got a kit from a place called “ Sound deadener”

When shall I bring mine round for fitting? wink

I really need to sort mine out clearly. God even your springs are still red. My front suspension looks like it's from the Titanic.

Thank you! I have had it 5 years now, and it barely see a drop of rain, or any bad weather.
Remember its also had a host of (many) new parts within those 5 years including the suspension, brakes, and exhaust.
I treat it like a classic car really, in truth you probably have a more healthy take on it all, I'm a bit of a fanny with it.biglaugh
Although you do seem to have a fetish for removing the engine from yours every other weekend to clean the bay, so maybe not!hehe
I do very much enjoy reading your threads though smile

I’ve had several iterations of exhaust on my car.

The drone (which comes exactly at 75moh in 6th ) disappeared completely when I went to the proflow long tube headers.

Haha, my arm was somewhat twisted by all the swarf in the oil filter hehe

After the F1 qualifying I'll probably sort out that o-ring and see about firing it up with open headers again cloud9

Quite enjoying the Walkinshaw racing system on the 6.0l Monaro, a bit rowdy on start up, quiet when cruising and snarls like a beast at the top end!!

(Headers to tailpipes, 1 set of cats)
