I have just had a go on my VX, I turned my key clockwise and the door opened. Anticlockwise and the door locked. Hope this helps

Thanks, I'll give the key some more stick in a clockwise direction tonight.

I'm in. Just as the manual says (thanks Greg). What I was doing wrong was trying to forcefully snatch the key across, this had no effect, which made me think that maybe security had been changed on the VX (the boot lock was removed on VX onwards).
Anyhow, having 100% established that on a VX the key direction to unlock is clockwise. When I got home I slowly applied a scary amount of pressure on the key, to the point where I thought the key might snap, and heard the very satisfying clunk of the door unlocking.
Many thanks to all who replied on here & by email & the kind offers of help.
Very much appreciated indeed.
I must admit to feeling a bit of a plonker, but with the exception of my Jensen, which has been off the road for a few years now, the last time I had a car that was opened/closed using a key, was 12 years ago.Oh well, live & learn. At least we all know what to do now. I heard stories of doors being wedged apart etc. One helpful suggestion from Aus. was to brick the window!

Really pleased you have got it sorted, been locked out before except with the engine running!

Ah good stuff! It is scarey the amount of force you have to apply to turn it!!!
I have done this too, put the car on charge over night and gone back out again and it still wouldn't open the car!!
After a bit of a read of the battery charger, I realised it would not charge batteries that are under a certain voltage! Another clown award for my mantlepiece!
