Hi all,

Well, I am booked in for my test drive tomorrow afternoon @ Slater's for an VZ new Monaro. My Father and a couple of people at work have been saying that they must get broken into or stolen quite often due to the power etc, I am hoping that does not happen to me (I hope most people will not really know what it is). I do worry about my cars as I tend to pet them rather alot (my pride and joy).

Other than the mandatory tracker I have noticed RingRam mention a custom ECU mod which allows a valet mode via a switch - anyone know anything more about this ? It does sound like a nice security device and I for one would buy one depending on price.

Any feedback welcome.

Cheers
Steven

No matter how much security you fit to your car will stop a thief from getting it if they're desperate enough I'm afraid. My insurance company didn't insist on a tracker but I got one fitted and I also had a new Thatcham 1 alarm system fitted plus I have a steering wheel disclock. That should hopefully slow any potential thief enough for me to alert the police (fingers crossed I hope I'm never put in that situation)

But asides from that, go for it. Good choice going to Slaters, that's where my mine came from and they are really helpful and they know their stuff. They got me the very last brand new Devil Yellow model in the country and they bent over backwards to get to me asap. Last time I went down there (I only live 5 mins away) they had a brand new VZ in Odyssey. Looked very nice. They still have a few unregistered 04 models as well.

Which salesman are you dealing with?

Odessy would have to be my favourite colour at the moment.

As far as security on them goes, don't know anyone back home who has had their vt and upwards car stolen. VN to Vp (1989 to 1992?) use to get stolen all the time, I think the VR through to current use the same sort of key system as the monaro has now. Had my old one attempt to be stolen, lucky enough I had taken out the bulb for the interior light (apparently this slows them down), and well, yup, it did. Wasn't a happy camper though, cause relised at how easy it was to steal them. Takes about 2 mintues...

Hi guys,

Yep, its the Odessey one I fancy - I forgot to ask them if it's still available on Wednesday when I called. It's just a little bit different than the red/black ones.

Fingers crossed then !!

Cheers

p.s. James is the sales rep I have spoken to

Shame I didn't get back to this post earlier, I'd have gone and had look for you. (Any excuse to go and drool over the VXR in the showroom). Mind you, even if it's not there, they can order one easily enough I should think.

There are 2 James's there, if it's James B, then you're in excellent hands.

Hi Yellow,

Well, sales rep is James Lewis - nice bloke and we did the deal (I would recommend a visit to anyone).

The Odyssey one had gone - shame, someone beat me to it yesterday. But no problem as they will be getting me a new one - yeah !!! I ended testing a silver new '04 which was nice but far too quiet for my liking - could not tell it was a v8 (and accidentally went from 2nd to 5th gear). But that demo 6l VXR, thats a proper sounding car - sweet sound. Is yours an 04 or an 05 spec ??

Anyway, I have two weeks before I collect the beast (sorry, I dont have male/female cars) and will be counting the days.

Cheers

Hi Steven,

Mine is an 05 spec but it has now been 'tweaked'. Looks like they're starting to shift their Monaro stock at Slaters now. I saw the silver 04 parked ready to go about lunch time. It usually lives on the display ramp next to the red one.

Glad you went for the 05, you won't regret it I can promise you that! I wasn't tempted by the 04 models despite them been abut 3k cheaper. Did you get a good test run? My test run was about 7 or 8 miles down some good B roads. I was so timid during the test run, I didn't want to stuff the car!

James Lewis sold me a Corsa SXI CDTi for my business just over a year ago. Sadly, I know most of the salesman there as I've had 4 cars from there in the last 3 years!

Welcome to a very exclusive club and get ready to become a celebrity at petrol stations, car parks and your local high street. People are only too keen to photograph your car on their phones, drive past you with their windows down, occasionally ask you to blip the throttle for them when they pull up beside you and generally drool all over it when they come to talk to you. Don't be shy!

Paul

Ps. My first victim was a Blue Astra VXR today - Nice car, shame he had an attitude, so he had to be put in his place!!!

@ VXR - Oh, so maybe have to get a new exhaust at some point. Thanks for the tip.

@ Yellow - in what way is it "tweaked" ?? Tune and exhaust ?? Also if you drove a 04, how does the 05 shifter feel ?? After driving the 04 today, my first thought would be order a GMM Rip (bear in mind, my coupe has a B&M and that is a very short throw).

I am currently, running mods through my mind, i.e. 04 was quiet and may not need too much dynamat extreme, but maybe for stereo upgrade (James is getting me a single din stereo dash templete). Maybe just initially upgrade the tweeters as its a simple/cheap upgrade.

Thanks
Steven

p.s. Hope to meet some of you guys sometime. Anyone, visiting the modded natioanls I will be on the Hyundai Coupe stand trying not to show them up !!

The 05 gear shift is marginally better than the 04 but it's still nothing to write home about.

My upgrades are the Wortec sport pac (Exhausts, ECU remap, modified CAI) plus I had a Ripshifter fitted. Going to get the headers done soon. Completely alters your driving experience and others here will tell you the same (after all they're the ones that got me into this tuning bug).

Stereo upgrade? Tell me more. I wouldn't mind changing mine but I don't want to lose the steering control facility. I would like to have a player that can play my mp3 discs. The old multi changer and no RDS and possible non DAB upgrade make it seem like an antique.

Oh good - hopefully, I will not have to get the Rip fitted straight away. I was thinking about getting one from Aus or US and fitting it at my local garage (full destructions on Pontiac GTO site) - will see how it goes anyway.

Stereo - well, I am not base head but Dynamat Extreme is god send (plus the new foam for higher frequencies). I have been checking out the speakers fitted as standard to the GTO and Monaro in Aus and they are rather poor (paper type). I am considering doing a full tweeter, door and rear swap (all but subs and tiny any - although I will have a spare Basslink sub from my coupe), plus replacing my stereo for a while with my existing Kenwood MP3/WMA. The problem is the steering controls will got out of the window !! I need to do some more research on the PAC (or whatever they are called to convert the factory steering controls to a 3rd party head). I suppose ultimate goal (maybe summer time) is double din DVD player with full dynamat and replacement speakers. Just for info I assume you know that amp in the boot can be tweaked for better sound (gain/level on the side of the amp).

I must admit I did not even try the stereo on test today, so maybe I am jumping the gun a little.

Cheers

Odyssey is definately the colour to go for. Looks even better with the rear wing fitted, if a touch pricey.
05 model gear change better than 04 model but the Ripshift is worth the money.
The re-map and cat back exhaust are also essential, the brake upgrade as soon as you have the funds.
Your lucky if you only have to wait 2 weeks to take delivery, i had to wait 2 months, but worth it.

Hi PCV8,

It's good to know that there are a couple of owners in Northern England.

Yeah, rip shifter is a defo but I think I will need to rob a bank on the other stuff.

Anyone know about this Valet mode ??

Thanks
Steven

Ok more info on the Valet mode if anyone is interested.
Im hoping to do a write up with pics later this week, though Im off to NZ soon so we will see.

Anyway the deal is that it requires a PCM update, the same sort of thing as a tune, in fact can be done in combination with one. It requires efilive tuning suite to do this as it enables previously unavailble functionality. The summary is to use a spare PCM connection and earth switch to signal to the PCM to run in standard or valet mode. Valet mode allows you to set a specific speed limit (whatever you chose) the same as the stock tune, but switchable and independant of the stock limits.

Full details soon once I get the pics and install doc together. It can be done either as a DIY, or in conjunction with a tuner. Its part of the PCM code and not able to be bypassed, unless of course someone finds the switch.

Finally got my vehicle setup with valet mode. 20mph max speed and 2000rpm.
Simple little switch enables the mode. Good for dropping your car off for tyres, MOT or whatever else. Needs an efilive update to enable. A number of the sponsors use this software so should be a fairly straight forward install.

On another tack I had a bit of a downer today. I found out that I had stock rockers rather than the yella terra 1.8's that I was sold as installed, when I bought the car. Just working with the sponsor involved to sort it. Makes my purchased cam a bit of a waste of time without them! Lucky I got it in writing.
