Time to start looking at these more seriously for me,

Hell of a price difference between an 04 5.7 and an 05 6.0VXR.

Is the 6.0 really worth the extra £10k or so or is the 5.7VXR the better middle ground.

the 5.7 looks a real bargain but would I regret not having gone for one of the newer models?

Tricky to find a place where I can test drive them all!

Hello mate.

I bought a new 04 5.7 off Greens of Rainham for £24,000 and on a 55 plate.
I've had the Wortec Sport pac fitted (£1500) and it now gives me around 400bhp, only 10 down on the 05 VXR + the VXR bonnet.
Around £10500 saved.

It sounds brilliant now compared to stock (don't forget to get a nice sound as a minimum on an 05 VXR you'll need to spend money on top of the purchase price) and also has a heap load more torque.

I'll admit the bodywork on the VXR looks excellent but then my car isn't bad either now that I've had the VXR bonnet fitted.

The brakes are a bit better on the VXR (not a lot, but a bit) and the suspension is better when really pushing along like on a track day.

Depreciation on the VXR can be horrendous.

For me it wasn't worth the extra.

Hope this helps.

Looks loverly!!!

Thanks that kinda was my thinking most people seem to splash out on new brakes and exhaust any way, I know the 6.0 has some extra bits apparently but just wondered if it was worth the extra 10k.

Serious question (although you may not want to think about this!) but how long before the 1st Monaro's hit £10-12k?

I reckon another 3 years from now, but what do you think?

One will definately be on the cards as soon as they're at that level. But the waiting will be painful

Earlier HSV's are already at that price range.

'Scuse my ignorance, but is there an HSV Monaro?

An autotrader search has produced a Maloo ute and a 4-door. Gotta be a coupe for me

Strictly speaking the Monaro is a Holden model...it's called the GTO under HSV in Aus...I think (it is a bit confusing and getting worse with the blurring of the VXR designation)

not buying new but seen some 6.0VXR's around 26k or some 5.7's at 16k 1 year older but 300cc and some other bits lighter.

Would I really regret not going for the 6.0 or 5.7 VXR?

No real confusion really, the VXR IS an HSV, being built in the HSV factory to HSV specs, just called VXR for vauxhall purposes.

I guess it depends on what is important to you and how big your wallet is.

I have an 04 CV8 which is puishing close to 450HP with similar torque with upgraded brakes and 05 VXR suspension which is way better than the stock CV8 and for a lot less than a new VXR.

However, I love the look of the VXR 5.7 or 6.0, in fact I think I prefer the 5.7 without the bonnet vents (IMHO)

The 04 CV8 and VXR(5.7) have much bigger boots if that is important.

But the VXR(HSV) differences do run deeper (suspension, steering engine, gearbox, interior)than simple power differences that can be made up with mods and that 6.0litre with the Wortec upgrades sounds the dogs...

The 5.7's with Wortec systems sound pretty damn gorgeous as well - you will never get tired of it.

Ultimately it depends what you are after and what you can afford - a CV8 with a host of straight forward mods is a very satisfying buy..

Speak to VXR pilots and they will say the same about their steeds as well and rightly so to.

That's true. I saw my first Monaro in the Wild on Sunday in Windsor (Hi John if you get to see this) which was a 5.7; I'm obviously slightly biased but just in looks alone the VXR looks more the part.
If only I had the 5.7 boot space though........

Refers to ASTRA VXR as Holden got that from Vauxhall, The Monaro VXR however, (other than very minor country specific requirements)IS an HSV GTO!

Strictly speaking the Monaro is a Holden model...it's called the GTO under HSV in Aus...I think (it is a bit confusing and getting worse with the blurring of the VXR designation)

The story so far....
Monaro CV8 & CV6 series 1, 2 & Series 3 CV8
HSV Coupes GTO & GTS, series 1 & 2 plus series 3 & LE GTO's as well!
HSV Coupe4 (AWD version with 5.7)
VXR 5.7 & 6.0
Pontiac GTO (5.7 & 6.0)

I reckon they love confusing all us punters but here is the timeline for those who want it (going by rough memory & general knowledge so I may of got some details a bit messed up).....
1. Commodore Coupe concept (started life as a drawing on the wall of the Melbourne home of Holden's chief designer whilst he was renovating one weekend!)
2. Holden (GMH) commisioned a concept for the Sydney motor show (2000 I think) and the massive interest & deposits generated gave them no option other than get it into production.
3. The Aus motoring press & anyone who loved Holdens in the 60's & 70's crowned it the "New Monaro" & GMH bowed to the inevitable retro heritage name.
4. The first Monaro's hit the dealerships - CV8 with the 5.7 we know & love & the less popular CV6 with a very poor cousin - 3.8l badly S/C V6. (admitting to owning a V6 Monaro was only for the brave!)
5. HSV took the Monaro under it's enhancement wing (as it does with most standard V8 Holdens) and the HSV Coupe was born.. 2 versions; the HSV GTO Coupe (sold into UK as the 04 VXR) and the GTS Coupe (I think I saw one of those once!). When new these were about AUD$75 & $96K respectively. Key differences were Calloway C4B enhanced donk, the big 6 pot brakes, Hydratrak diff, 19's, trickier suspension, 2-tone paint & a few interior glam bits.
6. At the same time, GMH were enjoying huge export success with 4 doors into the mid-east & cop cars into the US & managed to secure a deal with GM HQ to rebirth the Pontiac GTO (standard Monaro - nothing to do with HSV GTO)in the form of a slightly different looking, left hook Monaro - nice & simple, just how the seppos like it! The first few were 5.7 LS1 powered but the second series soon kicked in with the newer 6.0l power plant we see in the 05 HSV/VXR range.
7. HSV stopped the GTS after 2 series & until now still produce the GTO Coupe (VXR Monaro) and the Coupe4.
8. Standard Monaro production ceased this year (all the base cars above are made in GM's Elizabeth factory in Adelaide Sth Australia - Holdens are the only decent thing to ever come out of Sth Aust IMHO (chuckle)!). HSV have got enough stock to keep producing a few more Coupes & VXR's and the much hyped big finale version until the next rebirth in 2008 (fingers crossed)

So.. still confused???? (probably)
Gotta go pack now.. off home to 42 degree Melb in the morning! (HSV/HRT's hometown)
