Since I'm preaching to the choir here I won't go in to specifics, but.. wow.

I didn't get a chance to try the Astra VXR out (they sold it while I was in the Monaro), but to say I was impressed is an understatement. This was a '04 CV8 with a sports exhaust (a must have.. surely?!). It went like stink and made such wonderful whisperings in my ear as I drove. I was completely taken in by it.

333bhp (I guess with the exhaust it was a little more) is more than adaquate on our roads - it was very difficult to find anywhere to stretch her legs - it really only needs a 3 speed gearbox.. lol. But alas, my brain won't let me. I need a VXR in my life - why? Well, the look for one. And the extra kit - wheels, dual exhausts blah blah blah. If I don't have them then I'd probably end up spending thousands doing it myself and that isn't the point of this exercise at all! Modding.. is a no no.

So I shall report back after I've driven the Astra. Personally, I don't know how I'm going to get in that car without bias - but I must try.

Is this normal? I mean, surely a few of you were umming and ahhing until you drove one, and then haven't looked back?

Damn stupid, lovely V8!

Now that you've driven it, you're infected and your body is changing... The HSV DNA is a VERY virulent disease...

Now, no other car will ever satisfy unless it's HSV

I was indeed ummming and ahhing - I had a Z28 Camaro before the Monaro (the Z28's ran an earlier version of the same 5.7 engine). I had had the Camaro for 7 years and it was hard to part with. I drove a Subaru WRX sti before the Monaro the choice between Monaro and Subaru was an easy one for me but the choice between Monaro and Camaro was a lot more difficult, not helped by the Monaro being so much quieter with Standard exhausts.......but they don't make Camaros at the moment and a change was called for......so I changed it for the closest thing I could find!!!!.....and it was a good choice

In my view once you have had a V8 nothing else gets close - the Monaro is my 4th

Yes, a friend has a 3rd gen Camaro with the old 305ci lump. Makes a lot of noise, but doesn't do an awful lot. It's an attractive car though for it's size, most certainly.

The 2009 one looks great too - and the platform (Zeta?) will likely hold the next Monaro too. Yum.

Time will tell now - whether I can find one at the right money!

Astra VXR v Monaro? Pur-leeze

One's a FWD shopping trolley, the other's one mean mutha of a muscle car. (actually, I'm sure the Astra is a great car, but they are like chalk and cheese).

However, this years Camaro concept makes even the Monaro appear a bit of a wallflower. I SOOOOOOOO want one of these. Just hope GM don't water it down at all for production.

I agreee with the Astra Monaro/comparison, it's almost like comparing a F*rd Fiesta ST to a F*rd GT

But, and I know a few people would disagree with me on this one, this Camero is far to square, harsh & not 'sexy' at all. Not for me I'm afraid!

I personally think it looks great, it looks very similar to the cars on Burnout Revenge on my Xbox..Would like to say that I will be putting my hand up for one, but I think I will stick with what I know and get myself a Holden/HSV in the coming months. Just have to figure out which one now, so many to choose from especially with the new SS just been released with the 6.0L..Mmmmm nice!

Sorry guys, never seem to get to the forum over the weekend - too busy earning brownie points with Mrs Huffy!!! Actually I really like the new Camaro. I used to have a 65 Mustang fastback and at the time was also looking at a 67 Z28 and a similar vintage SS.....both were more expensive than the Mustang and as such the Mustang won - although I always liked the shape of that age Camaro....so of couse I subsequently brough an 89 IROC Z which wasn't the same shape at all!! but gave me a more modern V8 to run alongside the Mustang.

Going back to the new Camaro - I am working on the principal that the Monaro will keep me going long enough for them to put it into production and for the price to come down so I can afford a second hand one!!!! I think Mrs Huffy may have other ideas though....something about her desire for a Maseratti or something!!! Anyway rambling now - bottom line never enough money and the garage is always too small!!!

Well the Monaro is already dead as far as Holden is concerned. But the new platform should support the next Monaro.. should.

I've heard Pontiac may not replace the GTO (their version of the Monaro). Instead, GM will rely on the new Camaro for their 2+2 coupe.

I'd have thought there's room in the market for both.

To be honest though, GTO fans never really took to the "Monaro" GTO, claiming the styling had little to do with previous generations. Probably a good point, so perhaps they should have called in something different in the states.
