I used to have an '89 Trans AM GTA and that had an 5.7 LS1 engine in it too.

It deffo sounded different to the Monaro even taking into account the power output differences (think it was about 280bhp)
Much deeper, more grumbly like you'd expect a big V8 to sound.

Ideas & thoughts?

It will be because of the Wortec exhaust you have, different mufflers will give different sounds....

Different exhaust length, bore, mild or stainless steel, cat(s) fitted, exhaust wall thickness and silencer design / number of boxes. All make marked differences.

Ok cool, ta.

I think the GTA had catback's on it...deffo was a big-ish bore twin exit system.
Sounded superb.

If it was 280bhp, then Id say it wasnt an LS1.
The LS1 was only released in the Corvette in 97.
Minimum power from LS1 was from memory around 305bhp in the 98 Camaro.

Did it have a coil per cylinder and plastic intake manifold? Equally spaced exahust ports?

Otherwise the main reason is that the firing order changed from the old engine to the lsx series.

Big difference between an 89 engine and a 98 engine, huge in fact.

Boosted.

Wasn't that the LT1 engine as opposed to the LS1?

Ah, could be, yes...apols chums...I appear to be dyslexically challenged in the small block department.

Sorry lads, I don't think it was an LS1 or a LT1 either, I believe the LT1 (later reverse cooling) didn't arrive until the '92 Corvette. I think it then was put in the F bodies for the new '93 models. Both earlier small block and LT1 have same firing order, both different to LS1, hence different sound.

A friend of mine has a 5.0 in his '85 Camaro. His brother had a later car with injection (his is carbed) and that was also a 5.0. They had odd engine codes... but both sounded quite different from each other and much lumpier and deeper than my 6.0.

the generation 3 engine you have now was introduced in 1997 as a regular prodution order (rpo)Ls1 engine gen III. unlike your gta this engine has thousands of changes, alloy block, fuel injection, different firing order etc etc. you will never get it to sound like an old chevy motor even if you took the exhaust off.

If you want the old school V8 sound just bring the two banks into one on a single bore exhaust system.......

To hear the sound just pop into Monkfish on thursday and listen to the Turbo ute at their Tea and Turbo evening.....
