Found out about a new party trick the other day. Quickly drop 4 mentos into a 500ml bottle of Diet Coke. You end up with a fountain of coke.

The other thing is that if you get a 2 Litre bottle of Diet Coke, (we used a Freeway Diet Cola from Lidl's (cost 20p). and dropped in whole roll of Mentos, and VERY quickly put the cap on. Wait about 5 minutes or so, and shake it up a little bit. Then really really really quickly undo the cap. You will then get covered in a bucket load of coke, but you will have successfully launched a rocket, and watch it fly..

Try PE4 plastic explosive , much better velocity of detonation (VofD).

Although, make sure you're qualified as I hear Paddington Green police station isn't a nice place

Have to say I found it very hard to concentrate on any "scientific" aspects of that clip! In fact, couldnt see much of anything past the first 5 seconds of footage....shame she's a redhead.

And under no circumstances ever try this one at home. This is the chemical reaction that takes place when you set fire to Dr. Pepper

As someone who does this for a living..... that is definitely NOT Dr Pepper! Probably an accelerant of some sort(or are you being sarcastic and knew this all along?? )

Some chemical hand warmers and heating elements 'off gas' as part of their exothermic reaction (on contact with water usually). If you put one of these in a 'Panda Pop' bottle, screw cap on and shake.... then THROW away, quickly... the resulting release of pressure is nearly the same as an explosion. Another one is using swimming pool chemicals..... oops... said too much!

Confinement of said gas is the key

If we're really going to get stupid here, a certain 2 welding gasses in a balloon (in correct ratio) will rock the whole neighbourhood !! Just be damned careful how you set it off. Sounds like a 105 Howitzer being fired !!! Something to do when you've finally destroyed the microwave creating ball lightning and explosions. If anyones interested, I've found the perfect way to totally destroy a microwave oven in one easy step.......

Why bother with the balloons? Try leaving it in the cylinders for decent secondary effects! (although you might have to widen your danger area a little!)

Would want to be careful, you could end up with an American division invading your back yard looking for weapons of mass distruction.

We use to do the same, had some huge weather balloons, filled with appropriate amounts of gas, and then a couple of sparklers dangling from the bottom of the balloon. A few nervous moments when you were lighting the sparkler let me tell you...

On the minesite, we would make "UFOs" on night shift. Black Garbage bag, make a nice firm rim at the top for it with wire and then tie in a firelighter under the centre of the opening. Its just like a mini hot air balloon but it will float up and away for miles and miles. Not explosive but kind of pyrotechnical.

And the workshop boys were making guns of some sort out of poly-pipe that could fire a potato about 500m.

On charge up, its great fun to take the excess anfo and pool it in the middle of the shot. Tie it in with the rest for very last and give everyone a nice big mushroom cloud to finish the shift.

Way too much time on our hands.

Try a tin of spagetti on a fire (unopened of coarse) and wait about 5-10mins for a huge explosion and the laugh you'll get from seeing spagetti hanging of trees etc. Did this at a bike meet in NZ..
