Quite a few Tesco garages in my area (South Wales)are out of 99 grade fuel and have been for a few weeks. Just wondering if any one else has experienced the same?

So is the Monaro set up to drink regular 95 octane or 97/99 super unleaded?

set up for super but will live quite happily on regular as long as you're not being silly with the timing and tuning.
I was told by a reliable source stick to one or the other - a tank of super every so often has no effect whatsoever.

None at Talbot Green or Upper Boat for some time.
Gonna go into Cardiff and try Culverhouse Cross and Tesco Extra on A48 through town (Western Ave?)
Always use Tesco 99 :/

Some of the remapped ones will drop to a less aggressive map when run on the lower octane stuff. I stick to 98/99 octane.

By my reckoning (educated guess?) the difference between 95RON and 99RON fuel will give about 15-20 bhp less on the lower octane fuel. Suffice it to say I CAN notice the difference in the car, and I've heard that it can take 2 full tanks of 99RON to get the map back up to the proper settings.

Interestingly Tesco 99 has an octane rating RON of 99 minimum and MON of 87 minimum. As a comparison, standard unleaded petrol is rated at 95 RON and 85 MON and ordinary super unleaded at 97 RON and 86 MON.

MON is measured at higher engine RPM and is a better indication of the fuel's resistance to detonation under load. As you can see, the difference between super unleaded and conventional fuel is sod all so the assumption that more expensive petrol will produce more power through a more advanced ignition map is complete cock - it's much more complicated than that and calorific value of the fuel is same.

My CV8 may use FI but it runs on regular 95 unleaded and still produces 520bhp/585lbs so it really does depend on how your car is tuned.

My local garage is selling both petrol and diesel. I might try and get a Sunday paper later but if they don't have any I'll drive to Biggleswade to see if they have any. I'll let you know how I get on and keep my eyes peeled for Spotteds !

is that 430bhp as reported by a rolling road day or just what you were told it was and was your bonnet up when the reading was taken

ask Roger at Monkfish what your car was setup to run on for optimum (Wortec use 95 RON iirc) and then stick to that where possible. If you can't get 97 or 99 RON and thats what it was tuned for don't panic - you'll get away with a couple of tankfuls of 95 no problem though as someone said it may well drop to a slightly lower map until it detects the next tank of 97/99. If you still feel after going back to the higher spec its not running as well as before (allow a couple of tankfuls) you can disconnect the battery for half an hour to make the car do a "hard reset" with its map and default back to the optimum settings.
