The EXACT, Australasian equivalent of a TVR!
Does anyone know if the UK spec. GTS-R is different to the NZ/Aus spec. GTS? Or just in name?

Pelo, the GTS in the U.K. is the equivalent of the R8 (or might be the clubsport) and the GTS-R is the same as the GTS in Aus, except for minor details like fog lights etc. (See www.hsvuk.com) Of the 100 GTS-Rs built for Europe, 12 came to the U.K, all in black.

It's about time you git's get some real car action over there.
What's the point? you ask!
Well about 500000 Australians know the point.
Can you carry a dirt bike, mountain bike, jet ski, tools, camping equipment, dogs, cats and even a (mad)cow around in your TVR???

Did you know that HSV was actually formed by TWR (Tom Walkenshaw Racing) in Kidlington in the late 60's or in might be 70's, whenever the first HSV 2was born?
In fact I think the first one was nicknamed the "Walkenshaw" or some such.

So its British enginerring skill that gives the Ozzies there toys! I have driven a Maloo and it was bonkers, tail going ape shi*t all over the raod, what a blast!

just some more points on the Maloo
-Its based on the LWB Commodore wagan platform which is related to the Omega and is therefore NOT a pickup but a utility, as its based on a sedan/wagan. A pickup is a small truck
-you can get an factory SS model with 300hp for $48,000Aus
the maloo R8 for $58,000, an M3 costs appox $140,000Aus
-these cars offer bargin preformance in Australia which is only a small market

I never liked HSV's much back in New Zealand - a car for a Bogans with money. But over here in the UK, they are quite apealing as something different, but it's a shame they are the same price as things like M5's, wheras back home they were half the price. The build quality on the latest ones is pretty good. But let's face it - the best thing about these cars is the noise, no doubt about it. I would still consider an old school 'Clubby' on my return home if petrol isn't too dear.

Try www.britishlinden.com but I think they may have had a bit of trouble getting it through emissions tests.

Guys, this car, and its sedan brothers, sell for $50,000 - $100,000 NZ dollar, or 14,750 / 29,500 pommy pounds.
The base model gets you 3.8 l V6 with 165kw / 200 hp?

My Commodore sedan can move 5 adults, and their luggae from one of the North Island to the other ( 1000 kms ) in a day, in summer, no problem. Lots of space and pace. and that is the base model with the only option of air con. Fuel use ? 30 mpg.

Having driven in the UK with their small roads, tiny underpowered cars and expensive petrol, I can understand that having the HSV maloo , or any Commodore, in the UK really is pushing the limits, especially at the prices you poor buggers pay.

Well I like it! Love the idea of something different with a big f***off V8 in it.

Now can you buy one in Oz and ship it back for personal use I wonder - £20k for the motor second hand, plus £1500 to transport by sea - any import taxes to pay for secondhand goods??

if you are serious try these guys for nice used ones www.commodorecity.co.nz/
Some nice screen savers and pics as well.
They have used 3.8 V6's for $30k NZ or even a 5.7 gen III for $48 NZ. Divide by 3 to get pommy pounds and weep.

They're not the only mad ute y'know. Thing is, in Australia the GM-Ford thing is as bad/good as ever. And the Commodore has it's rival in the Falcon. They're both about as boof-headed as the other and pretty similar in just about every way. The only real differance was Ford Australia couldn't get the modular engines from the stang into the Falcon while the Vette one did go into the Commodore so for a while, Ford Australia had to make do with the windsor powerplant.

Anyhow, the VT-VX-VY Commodores share very little with Omega's now. The IRS and some basic styling is about it. They use the venerable Buick V6 and the supercharged variant, a standard GenIII V8 and a sports tune for an extra 10kW. Then you have your HSV's. The real bargain car now is the SV8. Has the same powertrain but the optional stuff taken out so it cuts in at $41K Australian for 235kW (310+hp?). Same sports tuned suspension though and 6 speeder.

Anyway, at the moment it's major enemy is the Falcon XR6 Turbo @ $47K Oz(The XR8 hasn't been released juuust yet.) and it runs in with 240kW but one of the fattest torque curves in a saloon. 450Nm from 2000-4000rpm. It's capable of more torque but the tranny they have won't handle more so it's electronically limited. Bah.
XR8 with 260kW will be a little more and has a new gearbox.
Then to combat the GTS Commodore there's a GT Falcon on the way, 290kW but supposedly again, a torque monster.

I'm not fussed by either much but prefer the blue ovals efforts from the BA. The 4.0 litre turbo XR6 is a pretty good allrounder. If only they gave it a stronger tranny. Ah well.

Yep, HSV was formed as a joint venture with Holden in the mid 80s, and TWR also owned the Holden Racing Team in our local touring car competition

You are correct in nickname for the original HSV being nicknamed the 'Walkinshaw', it was released in 1987.

Here's what she looked like

God himself,(PETER BROCK)was making Special Vehicals for Holden before Mr Wanxxxxshore got invoved !
Brocky driving for the (HDT)Holden Dealer Team was building Brock Specials that are now VERY Collectable cars.
HSV was formed after Peter Brock parted company with Holden.

As for the first piece of British enginerring the Wilkingshore (nick named the Ugly Duckling) it was a FLOP compaired to the other cars. Infact there is one in this country (UK) that was built for Mr W himself and you could probably buy for about £1,000.

HSV have become a very successful since the departure of the Scott ! and Holden I Believe are the most profitable Division of General Motors.

HOLDEN Drive On !!
