Good man!

Personally I am holding out until the car is paid for... 1 year to go, then it's a Suziki Swift!

I'll switch to diesel when I win the Lottery and Audi release the diesel R8. Not sure how bad it would have to get before I chopped the Ro in. I only live 8 miles from work, so the fuel prices don't bother me too much. I do drive a lot at weekends, but I can't complain about that as it's my choice, and I do love driving it. I think if it went to £2, then I might have to call it a day. £140 to fill up a tank that doesn't last long is mighty silly. Mind you, it costs over £80 as it is. That's why I don't let it get empty. Psychologically, it seems cheaper that way

Edit: I'll buy a hybrid when they look/drive/perform as good as my Ro. The prius looks like let someone in a blindfold hack away at a block of cheese and said "right, that's it stop, we got the shape we want, design a car out of that"

the way diesel is going any efficiency gains are ging to be wiped out by the price and tax increases over petrol.

hybrids are still imo just smoke and mirrors. you can get conventional cars with lower emmissions and better fuel consumption. not saying theres no future in them just as they stand now still not the ultimate solution yet.

take the tesla - after all things considered its manufacturers claim 66mpg. an original elise with a 20 year old rover engine and comprable performance performance (until tesla stop shredding tranmissions) was rated at 49.9 mpg. the vauxhall diesel protoype based on a carbon bodied vx 220 coupe was over 100.

I find it frustrating that Euro 4 engines are actually less economical than euro3 (sigh). its all bollock when you get into it.

fundamentally manufacturers needto start making lighter cars. unfortunately its an arms race as heavier cars get better crash test ratings.

the government could (apparently) drop the fuel duty by 12p as the increase in price has given a vat windfall tax profit. will that happen - will it hell. the UK is poised over the brink of recession and something like that would drastically reduce the chances of a major downturn and restore peoples confidence... far too sensible for this governmentto even consider. they would much rather set up hidden cameras in every car to tax people who pick thei noses.

The price of fuel doesn't really affect me because I use a piddly 1.0 Citroen C1 daily and despite the increases I've yet to see more than £35 go in a tank... but for the 'Ro? Well, it's a toy so filling up is no different to going out or buying myself something nice I guess...

.. but going forward, well when I change it for something else it'll likely be just as bad on fuel (911, Camaro.. whatever I can afford!) so I don't see the point in worrying. However, the reality may be different if it truely does go toward that £2 litre...

Good question. I think the answer is 'as long as I can possibly afford it'. Other than petrol and tax it's not very expensive to run so you can save a shed load just by not driving it. If I do sell I know I'll regret it so the answer for me is to use it as a secondary means of transport. My wife drives the family car (a diesel Focus) while I use my bike for work.

It's not too bad as I'd probably do the same whatever car I had - I hate sitting in traffic so the bike makes perfect sense. It also does 38mpg on unleaded and 0-100mph in just over 5 secs!

I hate the whole "Green" thing.

No matter what the price of petrol I'd still use it, would I change teh 'Ro for a more economical daily drive?

Probably not, if things got that tight I'd use the bike more.

Interesting story here about the price of oil etc:

No point selling, if it gets to £2/litre our cars are going to be worthless anyway, Enjoy them!!!(while you can afford them)

for all this talk of fuel etc I wonder how many of you realise that the Monaro isnt actually that bad - most of the guys I know driving Astra VXR's reckon they're lucky to average 18mpg. Going to be a hell of a lot of "worthless" cars - personally cant wait for the day when I can get an Aston Martin DB9 for 10 quid and a copy of the Beano.

Agreed - I've had way worse cars than the VXR8. I guess it does largely depend on the journey as the MPG drops like a rock in town but on motorway it's not too bad at all.

Not much in it..unless you fit a turbo. Anyway didn't you sell yours?

Sad thing is most litre sports bikes have these figures now.

I converted to LPG a year ago (Albeit not a Monaro) but my Audi A8 4.2 Quattro. I fill up at 44p per litre at the moment. I get 40p a mile whilst using it for work which is most of the time.

Interesting to see fuel prices go up but the inland revenue are still adamant that the 40p per mile which has been in place since 80p a mile is more than adequate.

My old turbo was doing a tank of gas in 70miles! (normal riding) made the Ro look economical! TBH the zx12 is a much better road bike, had one which went like stink but it was a bit rough round the edges so got shot of it. Got a nice Old School Katana now to do up, 1428cc (or 1497 if I can shop in florida next mth...) with RS41 carbs... mmmmmmm. smokin

I had one of those. Averaged about 23 mpg but it was the servicing costs that made me sell it. Great car though.

The price of oil is ++$130/barrel, but Exxon's production cost in west Africa is below $3 per barrel. Then the government stir up the pot to add to the misery....

To me the Monaro is the most fuel efficient car I own.

If i take the RX7 incomparison, the RO does between 22-27 to the gallon. The RX does between 4-16, and yes the RX is 1300cc and the RO is 6000 cc, so guess which one gets chopped first!

Lets face it lads, we knew what we were doing when we bought our cars, and I for one couldn't care less what the the price of fuel gets to, I love driving the RO, and that is everything to me.smokin
