I think on average the MPG goes up as the engines improve ie
LS1's - 18-24 mpg is a good ball park - never going to hit 30mpg without driving like miss daisy.
LS2's - 22-28 mpg - 30mpg is "easily possible"
LS3's - a bit more....
imho smile
LS7 must be the way to go then smile

You'll see claims of up to 30mpg 'on a run' or 'cruising' but I'd ignore these. Whilst I don't doubt it's possible to get the trip computer to show such figures (i.e after resetting the trip computer and cruising on the motorway for a few miles) it's the average figure taking into account cold starts, city driving, and the occasional blast that counts. 20 mpg average is what I get from mine ('04 CV8 with Wortec Focus pack) Driving it gently for a while doesn't seem to improve it much. Interestingly, the best I have ever had from the car was 23 mpg on a very fast run from Luxembourg through Germany to Holland on the Autobahns.

Can any Monaro owners give me an idea of what mpg they are getting? I want to know if running one is completely beyond the realms of my common sense? I do a lot of miles and currently run a 3.2 Vectra getting 27mpg so I am aware the Monaro would be quite a drop from this.
Cheers
yesterday I got 30mpg on the way back from Manchester. On the way up I got 28mpg and that was with some caining involved smile

I'd ignore all of that. YEsterday I set off from my friends house in Bury, reset trip counter and drove all the way to Swindon. My average speed read at 58.8 and my average mpg was 30.1mpg. So thats cold start, city driving, getting onto the motorway. I then gave her some minerals for the last 40 miles and it dropped to 29.5mpg smile

about 18 round town but i have just done Southampton to Fleetwood and back end of last week and Sunday and achieved 22.8 with an average speed which may have had a 9 in the front. I do mainly motorway driving avoiding rush hours and this is 'normal'

When i do a 450 mile run up the A1 or M1 @ 90mph or a tad more i get around 28 to 30mpg and 18mpg around town.
But before i had the better exhaust and Supercharger i was only getting about 16mpg and 28mpg on a run.

I'd echo all the above - around 23mpg I guess is a good solid number. I've had nearer 30mpg on a run but that'll be the M1... around town I average 16mpg. It's kinda moot with me though - I've done 7000 miles in 3 years O_o

Mine runs about 18-20 mpg around town and if cruising at normal motorway speeds I regularily get 31 mpg and mine has 550 bhp and 555 ft/lb torque making it even more remarkable.

LS1 was 10:1 compression,
LS2 was 11:1
LS3 I think is 10.5:1

I had very good mileage with my 11.2:1 LS1

All LS2's had HSV exhausts, arguably better than stock CV8 exhausts etc
Plus LS3 vxr8 exhaust is pretty good stock.

Gearing will also help. Tune, optimial exhaust, intake etc.
Also LS1's had lean cruise mode to lean out cruise conditions.

All things being equal the smaller engine would be better IMO.

I use my car every day for work and would agree that around 17-19 around manchester is about right. If I set cruise at 80 on the motor-way I'm getting around 28-29. To put it in context, a mate of mine has an RX-8 (god knows why) and he gets about the same urban and about 25 on the motor-way. I think the worst car I had was my impreza which which did 18 to gallon wether you were hammering it or driving like Mother Teresa.

Remember, petrol's still cheaper than beer and doesn't give you a hangover.

Mine is the 6litre LS2 and im getting 27 - 28mpg on a run at around 75mph, would probably get more if i didnt boot it so much on slip roads and roundabouts!!! Get heavy right footed and the consumption goes out the window, but then what car doesnt??? My main concern with heavy acceleration is buring the rear boots out and at nearly 500 quid for 2 new tyres last week fuel consumption is not my top concern.... Having said that i didnt buy the car expecting cheap motoring but have been suprised with how good it really is... smokin

15 or 16 mpg at the moment on LPG with a 6.0 VXR. Mostly my short daily commute, have yet to properly measure it on a run. On petrol was averaging just over 20mpg on the trip. Highest I've ever seen on the trip was 29.7mpg. Otherwise no higher than 27mpg on a run and I'm pretty easy on my car.

On petrol I'd assume you'll get 19-20mpg mixed with a 6.0.

I don't believe anyone's averaging 30mpg over a full tank, I've not managed it and have really tried just to see if it can be done. I'm not prepared to slipstream trucks at 56mph to do it tho.

Anyhow, sod it, the gas only costs me 49p/litre so have been more heavy footed recently.

You guys must have lead feet then - or am I just a pussy at driving but on a run from Poole to North Wales, all motorway with cruise on set to 60mph I managed 34.7 - or so the 'pooter said I did!! I really WAS trying to extract the last ounce of economy out of the motor though...not revving it much above 2K etc, etc!

On the other side, I've been as low as 9mpg - or so the 'pooter said!!!

I get 16-17 mpg around town with short/cold start driving. The best i had was 26.5 going from nottingham to gwent a few weeks ago and that was door to door. Or to put it another way i get 19 in town with my honda accord so there really is nothing in it.

LS2 in a Maloo (not sure of axle ratio; assume it might be a little lower than saloon?), 15-17 around town, 22 on motorways at around 80-90. Nice 200 mile round trip to Devon from Dorset on the coast road at the weekend, about 19.
My old 'Vette Z06 with the LS6 would often see 25 (UK), and even up to 30 on a gentle run, not that that happened often.

hope everyone on here mentioning speeds above national speed limit are talking about leptons rather than mph or have been using private roads/racing circuits because they wouldnt be that daft to admit to speeding on a public road on the forum now would they. BiB are known to monitor such forums and people have been prosecuted before.....
