Monaro - What mpg are people getting?
Discussion
I've just searched out this post as a prospective buyer. Looks good to be honest, sounds like it's better than the Focus on most accounts!
Just wondering... are you all relying on the onboard MPG gauge or have you worked this out from fuel fills? It's just recently I worked out what my mum's TDCi focus was reading was a whole 12mpg (about 20%) wrong from the real reading!

well I am at the mo running a 4.5 landcruiser on LPG I get about 180 miles on 67/69 litres of LPG which is about £35/£37
When I get my Ro on Friday I will be filling up with £37 of petrol and setting the mileage to zero, not that I am worried that much, just wanna see what it does compared to what I normally drive.

Oh I wholeheartedly agree, and before searching I was going to start a thread titled "if you have to ask.. You can't afford it"
however it seems that once I stop driving like a flaming gollah, I shouldn't see much difference to the RS, and I can stop using the 99 octane pump!

lol when u get one u will have ur foot flat to the floor so you can hear that V8 rumble if u can handle putting about £60 a week in the car and getting about 17-22 mpg then go for it. i went from a nice diesel giving me 55mpg to the Monaro which gives me on average 17-18mpg and its going to drop soon when i get the exhaust fitted this week

I personally don't believe any of the modern (or not so modern) turbo motors, Impreza, Evo, Focus RS/ST and the like are really any cheaper to run.
Yes a V8 can be very uneconomical if driven in such a fashion, but these LS motors make 95% of their torque at only 1500rpm. This means you can drive them a lot more fuel efficient than a small turbo engine yet still get good performance.
And as you say, these will run 95 RON (no point running 99 unless you retune for it IMO although you might see slightly better mpg with it).
But 95 ron does make a difference in terms of pence per mile.
If a V8 on 95 is doing 22mpg a turbo engine on 99 would need to be doing about 24mpg for the same cost per mile.
Gee I wonder why smaller turbo engined cars use just as much if not more fuel.. with less weight and power..
Probably something to do with the pathetic BSFC of forced induction over naturally aspirated engines.. You need to burn at least 30%+ more fuel per rwhp with forced induction. Its evil for the environment

Just for reference I average between 22-25mpg in the RS, but i'm no hypermiler...
Unless you are doing huge mileage I can't see it costing you anymore.Even if it was down to 18mpg in town it cost you about £265 do to 1000 miles compared to £227 in the RS doing 22mpg on 99 ron. But chances are the difference would not even be that much.

Im currently averaging 25.4, thats supercharged 6.0 and its one of the lower figures ive seen, clearly im driving the car like a complete fairy lol
I believe the correct terminology is "driving like a bladdy pooftah"
Haha well the roads are starting to get a bit damp so best back off a bit more
Hi, I've got a 2006 Monaro 5.7l V8 ......... blah... blah...
The mileage issue obviously depends on the way you drive it, around town, being kind to it, I get 19.5 - 20.5 mpg.
If I go on the motorway, the vehicle does like to be driven and performs well for a vehicle of it's size and weight. On a good motorway run I've had 26 - 28mpg. I tend to drive on the guages and you get to know when to hold the gears through acceloration and when to change them.
The vehicle is very forgiving and can be driven hard in different styles.

I haven't read the whole thread, so apologies if I'm repeating, but.....
FFS, if you have even the remotest qualoms about MPG, then why are you even vaguely considering a 6.0 V8-powered car? If MPG is an issue for you, then this is CATEGORICALLY the wrong car for you.
I've seen this time and time again - where do people get off thinking they can buy a performance car with a big petrol engine and get Prius mileage out of it?
MPG? Go find yourself a nice diesel Fabia which you can afford to run.

think this one is more about the diffrences in mpg everyone has , and just to see how has had the best/worst mpg ...not an issue of ..FFS, if you have even the remotest qualoms about MPG, then why are you even vaguely considering a 6.0 V8-powered car? Cheer up mate it's the weekend FFS, if you have even the remotest qualoms about MPG, then why are you even vaguely considering a 6.0 V8-powered car? If MPG is an issue for you, then this is CATEGORICALLY the wrong car for you.

Collected my Monaro on Wednesday from Quickars in Slough and drove it back to Glenrothes, 465 mls, average speed of 57 mph (lots of traffic and stuck up a lorries chuff for 30 mls between Berwick and Edinburgh) MPG of 27.6!!!!!!. Well pleased, last car was an Evo and the best I got out of that was 22 mpg going to a Funeral
