that's reset not turn off, but i have potentially have those codes as well only one real way to find out.... i need to get accurate logging working befre i attempt this... and some spare underpants on stand by.
Ahhh OK, fair enough. I'll continue down this road then and see if I can get anywhere...SturdyHSV said:

Next step? Resistance of the airbag, from a distance, hopefully without blowing myself up...
Sturdy, do you know the make and part number of the side airbags? You would need to open the seats up to find out, but if I can get supplier part numbers (not oem) I may be able to get some info or you. A picture of the label on the airbag module would be best. Melchett said:

If you ever go to the fish, my seats are hidden away in storage there somewhere, you're welcome to attack the drivers seat!
I'll try the dummy loads first and go from there.
Progress at last
The bad news? Dummy loads don't work, clearing code they come back. Possibly wrong loads in light of new information I have from Holden service manuals.
Conditions for the DTC codes are as below for any future googlers.
Values are the same for RHS side air bag as well.
DTC83 LHS AB Cap Too High
> 550nF
DTC84 LHS AB Cap Too Low
< 390nF
DTC85 LHS AB Res Too High
> 10ohms
DTC86 LHS AB Res Too Low
< 0.6Ohm
In fact, the values are also the same for the driver's and passengers airbags too, except for the drivers, the lower resistance limit is 1Ohm.
If any of these conditions are detected for more than 3-5 seconds, the DTC is set.
The airbag system still functions if any of these codes are set, unless naturally the fault causing the code is enough to actually stop it from working.
It won't stop the rest of the airbags from working however.
An interesting one for the FAQ possibly is the fact that the memory seat controller stores its own DTCs, and they can be tested through some memory seat button combinations etc.
Might help diagnosing problems when people's electric adjustment stops working.

Maplin only had 1 of the right capacitor in stock. The other 1 is in MK. Turns out we have some surface mount caps of the right amount here, so here we have some exceptionally well bodged together dummy loads
Going in the car after work, then I'll be pestering the fish again tonight, sorry Rog

SUCCESS!!!
No more airbag light for me
Used a ~4.7 Ohm resistor and a 470nF capacitor in series. Job's a good'un.
The driver / side airbag would also work with those values, so can now start considering steering wheels maybe
I hope this helps someone else, such a massive relief
you missed the fact the cap is a 16v one ;-)No more airbag light for me

There's two different types, one's a surface mount one in fact as Maplin only had one in stock of the DS80B I needed (went for the Polyester film ones as they have +- 5% tolerance, which means at 470 it'll stay well within the range. There were others but with only 20% tolerance, which could have seen it fall outside the range the car would accept)In the manual it expressly states not to put 12V across the testing tool, which tells me that they should never see 12V when plugged in, so yeah, that's your limit.
Thanks for your help too Nick
