Took the T350 out yesterday, got stuck in some traffic and the water temp went up! up, up, up! to 105 - 110 at times. The LCD indicated i had 'water sensor fault'... hmmm...

plenty of water in there and the rad is fine and the fans on the rad are fine too... anyone else get silly readings yesterday? (the oil temp was up in the 90's too)...

Similar for me - seems a fairly normal abnormality!!

I've been told that you don't need to worry unless it starts hitting 109+. Hotter than that can cause problems.

Also, the water sensor has a range of error about 5 degrees or so.

This was based on a conversation with a TVR indi, so hopefully fairly accurate.

i wonder if the uprated alloy rad keeps things a bit cooler in the hot weather?

One of the things I did last summer was upgrade that one. It does seem to help.

Best solution may be to try and avoid routes that get you stuck in traffic biggrin

Do the fans cut in at the correct temperatures? I had the same error message and it turned out to be the connectors for the fans which corrode as they are not waterproof and the fans were not cutting in. I think the second fan should cut in at about 98.

Had these replaced and the temperature doesn't get above 93 even in hot weather and traffic whereas before it was climbing to 115. On my car the dash temps are 6 degrees higher than they actually are as there are two sensors; one for the water and one for the dash. I do have an alloy radiator as well though.

i will check at what point they both kick in. i have seen both fans running well below 98, when i was adding oil yesterday, i noticed that they both kicked in around the 83/84 mark...

...however, i think the alloy rad might be worth investing in at some point...

An idea I've been kicking around with is having adjustable fan switches put in, but haven't seen the need yet.

I was stuck in hideous traffic in London yesterday, I reckon I was stop starting for over 3 hours!

Water never went above 97 and oil reached 98 a couple of times but mainly both sat at 96

Was a bit worried but she held up well, I do have an alloy rad which must help.

Mind you even though the car is decatted it was so hot in there, almost unbearable. Gearknob was like fire!

Have you tried water wetter in the rad. Its helped on my cerb and my T350, it also helps to avoid hot spots in the rads.

That's also something else i need to get round to doing - fixing the heat-resistance gear level...

i guess these cars arent really designed to sit in blistering heat all day doing 5 mph!

The corroded contacts comment is also relevent to the contacts on the ECU Temp sensor. Mine were corroded which obviously affects the resistance across them and therefore the value received by the ECU. At its worst my Temps were 20 Deg apart, now they operate within 2 Deg across the full range. thumbup

Would the coolant type make a difference at all?

My T350 had similar issues when I first got her. As has been said before the dash reading are 5/6 deg out from actual temps.

Mine too went above 110deg and I took it back to the dealer, they told me that the air was beeing blocked from going through the rad, they sorted it and temps were much better, not much below 100deg on a hot day (actual temps being around 92deg) but i didn't get that horrid warning beeping all the time.

An alloy rad won't affect temps, they are just more durable than the standard type.

I've also read that water wetter helps reduce coolant temps. This should be a last option though really, if there is a problem with the cooling system then it should be rectified imho.

Ally rad doesn't make it run cooler. Had mine replaced recently and she's still running as hot as before (98 - 110 on a hot day)

My guess would be most probably water in the system somewhere if both fans come on.

I'd also like to know if the type of coolant makes a difference.

Very low temp to be running the fans, first fan at 92 second at 96 is about right. Get the laptop connected and see what the ECU is receiving.

Water wetter I believe reduces the surface tension of your coolant so as your coolant works much better. An alloy rad isnt an upgrade just a replacement really, made of better materials.Water wetter reduced the temps in my car by 10degrees just by getting every thing working easier. Its worth a try. Its about £15 from any good motor supplier.

Cliff, just had a look at your blog, and wondered how come your insurance shot up this year compared to last? IIRC you're with MSM too, and mine came down this year confused
